Looking to purchase a butane or propane dehorner for all the little horned Herf's that will be popping out in the next couple of months. Any recommendations? Looking to spend about $200, maybe more if need be. Thanks.
 
You can build one that you can heat with a propane torch for about 5 bucks if you have a welder, acetylene torch, drill, piece of 3/8 round 30'' long and a piece of 1 and 1/4 round 3'' long.
Countersink 3/4 hole about 1'' into 1 1/4 , weld 3/8 to opposite end. Presto hot iron dehorner!
The better steel you use for 1 1/4 the longer it will hold heat
 
I prefer to use paste at birth, and at branding double check for horns and apply the hot iron if required. Of course if you don't brand that wont work very well.

That's what we do too. Tried a butane one a long time ago and it was a pain the rear :? Maybe they've improved.
 
We used Dr. Naylers paste back 25 years ago, until a bad batch of it reactivated in a rain about 2 weeks after it was applied. We doctored infections and maggot infestations half the summer.
We brand so having a couple more irons in the brand oven is no problem. Like all methods, if it's done right, the horns never grow.

So do Polled Herf's :P . Father is not a big fan of paste, and if no one has any recommendations on the butane ones, than maybe we will just keep using Barnes dehorners on them.
 
We have several laying around from our Hereford days. Most of them are just various size nuts welded onto a piece of rod, then heat on the oven.
 
I use a Buddex Dehorner...expensive, but I've been using mine for going on 15 years...replaced batteries once. Works great...as long as batteries are hot!!! Built in timer so you don't have to worry about burning too long.
