Demodriver off to college!!

FH-----I could not agree with you more!!! Gussie's roommate comes from "uppercrust" and her folks are paying her complete way for nursing school at Carroll....at about a cost of $36,000 a year and she is not even really sure she WANTS to be a nurse.....says "I went into nursing because there are soooo many jobs out there for nurses!!"  Oy Vay!!! She will have her eyes opened!!! Gussie has several job offers, but I told her to take one close to the school (since she does not have a vehicle and winters can be BRUTAL) and that will work around her school schedule!!! I went to take her a few more things (including her new eyeglasses that just came in today) and got to meet one of her new friends...nice young lady going into psychology!! Gussie seems to be adjusting really well and likes her instructors and classes!! Made for an easier ride home this time just knowing that she is doing so very well!! :D :D
You know how common it is for college kids to change their majors. Unless they grew up observing someone in that area of study it is often impossible to tell if they're suited to it despite the fancy tests available. If her idea of nursing is based on tv shows  she may be in for a rude awakening.
On the other hand it is good she is thinking forward about being able to get a job   There are too many former psychology majors on the unemployment rolls being supported by you and me

nr----gussie says that on her first night there, they had meetings with senior advisors who were in the same field of study as they....gussie says that 85% of this years freshmen are "pre-med".....the advisor told them that by semester that number would drop to 15%-20% because many of the "pre-med" students would realize that the study load is danged tough and they would choose a different field!!! They went from freshmen to freshmen and asked them "why have you chosen medicine"...gussie was stunned by some of the responses...."money", "prestige", "mama told me to"....."glory and fame"...etc! Gussie's response silenced the crowd..."I lost a cousin at the age of 7 after a 4 year battle with neuroblastoma...I was 9 and I knew that something was wrong when a child is not allowed to BE a child and will not live long enough to see adulthood because of cancer!! That and my mom being a nurse and caring for cancer patients and having to watch them lose the battle!" Somehow, I really have a feeling that she will be one of the few to finish....IF she can make it through all the science classes!!!

There were a lot of premed students who fell to the wayside at NU my freshman and soph years.. Not from deciding it wasn't for them but having it decided for them.. They make Chem, Physics and Organic Chem weed out classes along with the higher level Calc classes and all are required to take Biology there which is the final weed out class.. Some of them classes are so darn tough they almost weeded me out of school.

That dream should do a lot to carry Gussie through! We have a friend whose daughter is in the last stages of residency. She even considered dropping out AFTER getting into the residency program. And she is a very smart gal- it is all the stressors that are a killer even beyond the courses. My hat is off to Gussie for her goal. Give her our best from Ranchers. :tiphat:
