Desert Ranching

Andybob,
We run what are called papago cows pretty much purebred herefords just climatized to the desert (little bitty waspy things) with them big ole dieing Angus bulls on them.
Rancher6969,
We have wells anywhere from 200 to 1200 feet just depending on where we are pumping as more and more people move in around us we have to keep deepening wells. Some of this country west of us runs a cow to every1200 acres we do a little better here tan that

I bred Tuli seedstock in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, as they are low maintenance very fertile cattle under severe environmental conditions.
I exported several foundation herds to Namibia and South Africa, but still bred 20% of my older cows (less advanced genetics) to Simental and had a good trade for the F1 females for terminal crossing, the steers went to a feedlot, good return on the heterosis, as Texan pointed out.
Aztumbleweed, we had a neighbour whose family had brought Herefords into our area in the 1890's they wre the only fullblood 'exotic'herd in our area but were nothing like the traditional Hereford, possibly similar to yours (they crossed well with Tuli too!)
