I have been asked to say a few words at my uncle's funeral. Unfortunately this is probably the busiest time of the year for me and I won't be able to prepare properly. Usually I would write something. If you have something really nice, I would love to use it :) Wow!!! that is two uncles under the age of 60 to pass away due to colon cancer this year. My stroke, the divorce, and Lori's unexplained death have really made 2006 quite the year. Funny it doesnt feel like it was a bad year?!!! at all :) They always say that you would never grow or learn anything without some bumps in the road, I must have done some kinda growing this year :) here's looking forward to a much better 2007 ! Keep smiling everyone :) (and when no one is lookin put Bailey's in everyone's coffee :), put a tinfoil ball on your cat's tail or kiss a weiner dog on the lips :) all of the above will make you smile :)

sorry to hear that Judith, but it looks like to me, you have a real good start

"They always say that you would never grow or learn anything without some bumps in the road"

I would elaborate on that....

Here is the only thing that I have to offer, it was written by my grandfather 72 years ago after grandma's death. Grandpa was well schooled in Germany and came to America at age 12. This was read at his funeral nearly 50 years ago.

Oh the glory and the gladness
Of a life with a fear;
Of a death like nature fading
In the autumn of the year

Of a sweet and dreamless slumber
In the faith triuphant born,
Till the bells of Easter wake us,
On the resurrection morn!

Oh for such a blessed falling
Into quiet sleep at last,
When the ripened grain is garnered
And the toil and trial is Past;

When the red and gold of sunset
Slowly changes into gray
Oh, for such a quiet passing
Through the night into the day!

Sorry about your Uncle Judith.....I love the attitude for life you have :)

Poems, hmmm My favorite one is "The Road Not Taken"

I sure hope 2007 is good for you Judith, 2006 was kinda hard. I really like the poem Martin Jr. put on. I don't have anything that would fit the bill but I was thinking (imagine that), one of my favorite all tiime songs is 'Til The Circle is Through, Ian Tyson, may not be for all people cause I'm sure alot of people would not quite get the meaning of some of it.

'Til The Circle is Through

The high soaring hawk
The dark awkward crow
The white gull alone on the
High rolling sea
Must make their way home
Best way that they know
No different for you and for me.

We will stay where the river runs through
The range and the sky buckskin and blue
We will ride to the end
On the wings of the wind
'Til we're home and our circle is through

May the children read
May they understand what is of true value
So the truth may be known
The glory of God and the dark side of man
For one day they must ride on alone.

May they stay where the river runs through
The range and the sky buckskin and blue
May they ride to the end
On the wings of the wind
'Til they're home and their circle is through

May the river flow may the salmon run
May your nights be crowned with a mantle of stars
May your pony stay sound for the work to be done
He'll get you home with your dreams and your scars

May you stay where the river runs through
The range and the sky buckskin and blue
May you ride to the end
On the wings of the wind
'Til you're home and your circle is through

Ian Tyson

You guys are fantastic! Thank you so much for the help :) Unfortunately I did not know him well. That always makes thing so much harder when preparing to say a few words. I'll be off the board for a couple days but I will be popping in and out to make sure you guys are behaving :)

sw - that song is new to me and it gave me goosebumps! Thank you for posting it.

My thoughts are with you Judith. Something tells me that you will do just fine.

Only advice I have is to stay away from any banisters!

sw....whats the name of the CD that song is on....I can't find it on any of gregs, and trust me he has almost all of Ian Tysons cd's. Is it an older one, maybe we have it on cassett somewhere, anyway its beautiful and I sure don't remember hearing it....THX

Just give ol' Saddle Tramp a holler. He's always got some good ones. Read me one he had written for a nice ranch lady, a week or so back. It was real nice.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

Mrs Greg,
that is the last song on the "Eighteen Inches of Rain" album, cd cassette. I think it is one of his best ones. I used it in the video that I made for the Marine when he graduated from High School just for the wisdom in the second verse about kids someday going out on their own. That gave me a little more than goose bumps :cry2:

One of my favorites.

Of Horses and Men

It's been told of good horses lost
In simple words that cowboys use
He dern sure was a good one
He's the kind you hate to lose

He's the kind you could depend on
In the river and the breaks
In rough country and wild cattle
He'd be the one you'd take

His efforts weren't ruled by stature
With him you'd finish what you'd start
His limits were governed only
By the dimension of his heart

His expectations were simple
Merely fairness from a friend
But when he'd feel the need to run
It's best not to fence him in

Pure poetry in motion
As across the plains he'd fly
A tried and true compadre
In a seasoned cowboy's eye

His courage was unmatched by mortal men
From conquistadors to kings
Cowboys sing his praises
At roundups in the spring

Ain't it strange how thoughts of horses lost
Mirror those of men passed on
And though they've gone to glory
Their spirit's never gone

Sometimes simple words seem best
When final words we choose
He dern sure was a good one
He's the kind you hate to lose

I met Jay and his lovely wife a few years ago in Kanab, Utah. He's got a tape/cd out and I'll bet everyone on it, is a good one. Nice guy, good cowboy and a whale of a poet. :)
