Does anyone want to buy some nice baldy bred heifers?

Glad your heifers sold well Soapweed. I watched some bulls sell at the start of the sale while eating my lunch, hoping that maybe I would see your heifers sell.
A visit by some Forestry burocrats ended my hope. :(

You should have bought those horned cows and sent them to that Lazy H feller. A year or two with them and he might learn how to be a real cowboy instead of just a photogenic one.

Quite a few interested spectators

I saw that you were selling your heifers and I was looking around to see you but didn't. You were sitting righ down from me. I am the one with the dirty hat on the left.

I watched some of the sale on the internet cattleusa.com and the camera is pointing towards where you were sitting but I didnt see anyone taking pictures so I didnt recognize you without a camera in your hand. They sure sold good, but then again, I would expect them to for the quality they were. That high headed, rank-looking cow would keep the pheasant hunters out of our pastures in Texas!

Those ol' cows with horns and that "look" are just really good mamas! This country has it's share of wild cattle and they have taught me a thing or two! From the looks of those crossbred jersey's at your place you're more of a zoo employee than a buckaroo! :D

I wondered who the gentleman was that was sitting by Nick. Wish you could have picked me out; we could have gotten acquainted--maybe next time. P.S. Wear the same hat and maybe I can recognize you.

I have a question. The sale barn ring and seats look much like the ones in Alabama. However, in Alabama we have a row of chairs in front along the ring fence in which the order buyers sit. The question is where are the order buyers?

The order buyers pretty much just try to blend in with the regular people. They sit alongside other ranchers, and nonchalantly scratch their nose at appropriate times so that the auctioneer "nose" they are bidding. Sometimes, the auctioneer inadvertantly becomes a temporary order buyer if he takes a bid out of thin air and no one bids that one more time.

Going to a cow sale is like watching a poker game in progress. There are lots of things going on behind the scenes.

At our local sale barn we have had a problem with order buyers for years - - - - to the point I feel some should go to jail.

If you watch and a group of calves come thru it is very likely one of the order buyers will buy them and the sale will be recorded to a " farm owned by the sale clerk" and then about 10 minutes later the same calves will come back and bring a much higher price going to an order for the same buyer. It seems the order buyer gets paid a percentage of what he gave for the calves. If he was to place the order the first time thru he would make a small amount but he and the clerk split the proffit on the first sale and then he collects his commission the second time around.

I have gone to the prosecuter but being as the clerk is also one of our county commissioners nothing has ever been done - -- - if a stink is raised it will stop for a week or so then go right back to business as usuall.

The sale barn takes the position that they cannot control if you buy something and then decide to resell it.

For this reason I rarely buy or sell locally - - -- but this is probably a common practice and I just don't know the players at the other locations.
