My oldest corgi has been limping for awhile and acting really lame.
Took him to the vet today. Found out that he has torn the tendons in his knee.
He will have to have surgery to repair it.
Talked to the husband and we agreed to go ahead with the surgery. He is a young dog(3yo) and we don't want him crippled with arthrtist this soon.

The vet said this is common in very athletic dogs. There is also an 80% chance that he can do the same thing on his other leg. I hope not.

The clinic can get him in in 2 weeks.

Bummer! Hope it goes well. Interestly enough, we train upland bird dogs and have never had that happen to one (knock on wood!)

Is this a back leg injury? When I worked at the vet clinic, the boss would call what is known as a stifle joint in a horse a knee when referring to a dog.

If so, it's a very very common injury. I know of one vet who devotes most of his practice to the repair of these injuries, and he's a pretty busy guy. Usually it happens when they're playing hard. It's more common in bigger dogs though, because they are so much heavier, and put a lot of stress on that joint when they stop and turn hard. It can be a sort of 'weekend warrior' injury in that a dog sometimes suddenly just plain goes too hard and pulls the tendons. The surgery is usually very successful, especially if the vet has done a few of them before.

His other leg won't necessarily have this happen, but to help prevent it, it's a good idea to get him lots of exercise to keep his joints strong. That's probably not a problem for you. 8)

Best of luck. :D

I think my Fern has a Wknd Warrior injury.

She goes from ' nothing to ninety' and plays like she bullet proof. She is kinda limping on a front leg. Not constant, but just when she first gets up in the AM or from a long nap.

Once she gets to moving about, she's fine and runs and plays like nothing is wrong. She shows no tenderness or soreness when you flex the leg or joints.

So, we're on some anti inflam. meds till next wk.....then we might go see the Dr if not better after the meds and lots of bed rest.......on my bed seems to be her spot of choice!!!

Kola, at my age, I think i can identify with what your dog feels.

Except for the "bed . . .spot of choice" part.

Thank goodness for me!!

If you're that " stove up" I'd have no use for you anyway!!!!

Vet called, they have a cancelled appointment for the 11th. So they are getting my dog in then.
He is getting worse and his foot is turning in to make up for the pain.

Hope all goes well. Fern is hopping about as she seems to have pulled a muscle in her shoulder. XRays next week if not any better.

Keep us posted!

Took him in this morning at 8:30 am. They got done with the surgery at around noon.
I stopped by before heading home and boy was he groggy. :D Even as loopy as he was he wanted to go home. No way. He might be able to come home tomorrow. I sure hope so because of the bad weather coming in.
I have been told that the 2 pups can't be around him because they might accidently hurt him. He has to be confined to a room away from them, so he will be in our room.
Hope he heals well.

HURRAY HURRAY I 'm bringing him home today. :D :D Suppose to be above zero today. Was just too dangerous last few days.

Well the vet said that it was an old injury   that just started to bother him. There was a bone spur in his knee and that was causing most of his pain. The menisiskis (sp?) in there was torn and had folded onto it's self. He was able to repair it all. There was some swelling after the surgery and they started him on antibotics as a percaution. He was up and walking around, but not putting any weight on that leg yet.
I know he will be so happy to come home.

Boy was he "talking" when I walked in the room. :D
He cannot walk up stairs, jump in a chair or couch, run around for several months.. No cat chasing. :(
Has to be on a leash when ever he is taken outside so he behaves.
He looks funny without all his hair on that leg. Can't find my camera, but will post a pic when I do.
The staples will be removed in 2 weeks. They gave me a "cone" in case he starts picking at them.

After a bad wreck in my bullriding days, the Doc gave me those exact instructions! Who'd a thunk it!

Did you have to wear a lamp shade on your neck too?
