I just got a phone call from a neighbor of mine- young rancher that has gotten 4 border collie pups from me over the years...He heard my old bench was about to pup and wanted to put an order in for two...

He lost one of the pups he got 2 years ago to coyotes- but still had an old dog that worked great anywhere and a young one that was just coming along great....

He went into his story- about broke down telling me...He said a week or so ago the pup walked into the feedlot office and dropped dead-- then a day later his old dog got sick, vet said it was kidney failure and did dialysis and IV's until she died yesterday...

Since they have a multitude of feedlots and ranch's that they were at, he's not sure what brands of dogfood were at each place- but the Vet said it is symptomatic of the dogfood that is killing all the dogs... He had her posted and is sending the kidneys to the Bozeman Lab for further testing....

I'll bet today he'd throttle the folks that decided to import cheap wheat from China to make a buck, if he could get his hands on them... :(

I will make him a gift of a couple of pups in a few months if my old gal has what he wants....

It is sad...but like you said in another thread, what bothers me and you is the transfer to humans. Two weeks ago our grandson was visiting and trying to force feed our new pup some dry dog food,as quick as possible Waylon had the dog food in his mouth

We had a dog die of Kidney failure a few years back.. It was a rough death for the old boy in my opinion and after a few days of fighinting it hard when he gave up, we gave him some peace with an injection....

This whole Menu's food with the imported wheat gluten is kind of aggravating. Blame the chinese for using the chemical they used, blame Menu foods for purchasing the wheat Gluten to cut costs, blame the dog food sellers because for demanding the product be produced for as cheap as possible, blame the retailers for pushing the manufacturers to keep prices down and blame the consumers in general for not wanting to have to pay an increased amount of money for their dog foods due to higher ingrediant prices.. Can't say I blame them because I cringe everytime I buy dog food for my pups.. I try to close my eyes and ignore what we spend on dog food as best I can... But with 3 100+ pound mutts, 3more between 60-100 pounds and 3 45 pounders, well.. you can imagine the food bill.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the lawsuits... I have a feeling any future imports might e inspected a bit better by the companies using them if a lawsuit smakes them with some major damages.

I thought the Menu foods deal was there was rat poison in the food? Haven't heard about the wheat gluten thing with Menu.

I was scared to death when I saw Nutro (which is what I feed) was on the list, but then saw it was the canned and pouch foods. But heck, you still never know if they aren't finding something in the other foods too.

I'm with IL, I spend a bit on food for the feeling that your dog is safe from junk food, but then this comes along.

It's horrible when when your dog dies like that for ANY REASON...but then you have the guilt of knowing that YOU fed them the bad food!!! :cry2: :cry2: :cry2: :cry2:

BUT...ya gotta wonder if any of this tainted wheat gluten got into any human food? I know they are supposed to be labeled for Human or non-Human consumption....but there also as NOT supposed to be any rat poison in there either. Who knows if they got the labels screwed up as it is all labeled in China under the producers guidelines...not ours. We just take their word for it!!!

My dogs are getting A LOT of cornbread and table scraps these days!!!

I have actually bought some butchering equipment and instead of selling off some culls we are going to butcher them. Ewes, open cows, goats, it doesn't matter... Haven't started yet because the scale and economics of it are a bit much but the wife figured out some rations and it might, might be cheaper than the super premium foods.

The rat poison was in the wheat Gluten sic'em... There was another screw up to, that was some other chemical but not involved with menu foods.

I found out a little more this morning when I had breakfast with the young ranchers FIL-- according to him they have now lost 4 dogs- 1 other at the ranch and his SIL's....Were feeding the dogs Purina dogfood and IAM's (I'm guessing the packages that they could carry in the truck and feed the dogs during the day- as these dogs worked all day long)...Now they are waiting to hear back from the Lab... :(

Good thing I didn't stay at the coffee shop- or go to the watering hole to catch up on news...I got my running around done and headed home- on the way noticed one of the cows out in the field calving- was with another cow and her 3 day old calf...Not too excited as it was an old cow, but with the wind and temp dropping (down to 37) kept an eye on her... Pretty soon I saw her drop a calf- and go to licking him off- and calf trying to get up, so went back to chores...A little later I looked out there-- no cow...
The other cow and calf had wandered off and she was trying to claim its calf...Ran out there and loaded the new calf up- took it to her- but nothing doing- she wanted the other calf :? I loaded the calf again, left him under the pickup heater to warm and went back and got the 4 wheeler and corraled all 3-- cut out momma and threw her in a pen- and brought the now warmer calf out and she took right to him...I looked a few minutes ago and he was a sucking away- and looked like he'd done a good job working another teat too....

But I'm the one froze now...Why won't this happen on the 70+ days instead of the 30 degree days with the "snain" coming down, the wind howling 50 mph, and my arthritis acting up ... :???:

Isn't nutros one of the higher end brands? I feed dry Diamond and have always liked that.

Nutro is upper middle end.. More expensive than Diamond, less than Eukanuba and a lot less than something like Solid Gold or one of the really expensive foods that you might as well feed your dog filet instead of the food to save some money..

I thought that the only food affected was a gravy based wet food and none of the dry ones.. We don't feed wet food to our animals unless it is raw beef bones that we get back from our butcher animals...

I agree with IL, lets feed em more meat, these are carnivores not vegetarians. Why are we feeding grain and grain byproducts anyway- answer because it make some CEO's bottom line look good. Didn't help those dead dogs tho. I spend around a hundred bucks a month on dog food, an extra freezer and some unwanted horses, this thing can pencil.

I'm sorry OT but I'm under the impression it was only wet feed that was the problam not the dry dog food.

Thats what the IAMs pouches are- wet feed- and some of theirs was recalled...But I'm not sure if it was pouches or cans- only assuming pouches because I know thats what several other guys pack for the noon doggy lunches because they are handy...
All his FIL said was IAMs- and Purina- but I don't think Purina had any of the bad stuff...

Sure, some of it is ceo profit, some of it is what folks are willing to spend on the dogs.. and some of it is to fll them up so they don't end up weighing 10k pounds... Than I hav emy kelpies that when I am working them hard I swear I could give them pure lard and they would loose weight..

I don't know.. IF I had a fish pond I have a dog that would live on fresh fish if she was given the chance (Part Malamute, she LOVES fish).. Don't know if I could do the unwanted horse way but I know I could do it with a cow with a broken leg, or an open witch that I don't want to ship. Have the freezer space.. I know we are saving stuff from the processing of our calves to give to dogs that we don't eat ourselves to why not extend it... We have actually gotten calls from folks looking to buy our cull cows to use in dog food for their critters but what they really want are yearlings or heifers but don't want to spend the money... An old cow has a lot of chunk meat and bone on her..

You guys all need to feed Provipet Dog and Cat food.
It is Vigortone's brand of pet food and has the strictest of
ingredients. NO RUMINENT because Vigortone stores it in their
warehouse and they don't want any ruminent products there.
It contains chicken meal, which means it has no beaks or
feet.

A trial was conducted in Argentenia recently and Provipet
was the top dog food. I do think it is going to be marketed
nationally, so watch for it.

Otherwise, you can get it from
your Vigortone dealer. We sell a lot of it. It is highly digestible
and the Senior contains glucosomine for joint health as long as
some wellness ingredients. It
has really helped some older dogs in our area.

And you will find it is quite reasonably priced. It is classified
as a SUPER PREMIUM DOG FOOD.

Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!!

You didn't butt in anymore than the rest of us. That's
what this site is all about, Jerry. BTW, I enjoyed reading the
why and wherefore's of your boots.

OT, I am really sorry about that fellow's dogs. I neglected
to mention that in my previous post.

FH- I'm glad you mentioned the Vigortone dogfood- I had forgot about it...Always handier just to grab at the grocery store-- but I think we may get some and try it....All these dogs of mine are getting a little age and could use the glucosamine- except the pup (she needs some valium sometimes I think    )

ot
iv'e never thought of using vallium on a pup
now thats funny
but i think i would worry about working bred pups that didn't look like they nedded it
until later
