After Old Dog/New Tricks called me a Greenhorn (on Horse Forum) it reminded me of some interesting factoids about the above terms.
I am a greenhorn in more ways than one. That word was a term of derision aimed at the Irish who early on came to this country wearing tri-horn hats.
"Fink" my husband read recently, is a journalism term which stands for:
Frendly Insider with Needed Knowledge
And "don't mess with him" supposedly comes from soldiers refusing to eat with a deserter who has been returned to the army.
