I know squat about Draft horses. But I was offered a really nice Perch mare on trade for starting a colt. She is lovely but I noticed that few people use them. Seems like the Belgians are the top pick for using animals. Anyone know why?

Couldn't tell you but I think I heard somewhere that Perchs are a bit mroe lively tempered than Belgians... Around here they say Belgians are stubborn and argumenative but they are talking people not horses

As a rule, percherons are a little hotter blooded than belgiuns.

If you want a snappy team that will really get out and cover country, you'd probably want a percheron team.

If you wanted a slower, less hot team, that walks along slower, you'd probably want a belgiun team.

But these are just generalizations. Any particular horse or team can blow this theory all to hell! :)

I went to look at her yesterday, I have to tell you I was surprised at how "light" on her feet she is! Real pretty and soo sweet. I'll let ya know if its a final deal or not. I might be taking the other one she is a TB/Draft cross in foal so we shall see. They have no experience birthin them babies so I may just take her to keep them out of trouble. Nothing like babies being born in puddles out here! Some people just don't have a clue........

Grab this mare quick!! Perch have wayback Arab, which makes them more of a rideing horse..Ben K. Green thought a Perchron/Thurobred cross was the best horse in the world, called them Thochrons..

The mare I lost this spring was a draft (Percheron I think) thoroughbred cross, and she was a good saddle horse. She was a clean sixteen hands, and I'd give my eye teeth to have her back! I may have to go shopping for another one someday.

Texas Prison System bred Percheron/QH crosses for the last few years. They still do. They use them to track inmates in the fields, and also for workin cattle. Nearly all thier horses are a cross like that these days, cuz they just hold up better when they have a fat boss man sittin on their backs for 8 hours a day.

Lilly,
You callin me a fat ole boss man? First Mrs. Greg calls me a witch and claims I'm gonna git a broom stuck to me arse alla tongue on a flag pole and now this????? Gosh this must be a family :) :D :D :D

Noooooooooooooo I wasn't callin ya fat......I was meanin that they are good strong and will last all day. I"mma hafta proof read my post more betta n make sure they don't sound like that no more LOL

you can proof read you posts until your eyes bugg out. I will always be able to turn it into something it wasnt mean to be:) LOL No one is safe around the Juditnator........

If your thinking of breeding Warmblood type horse/well you would have to know more about it than I do.
I do know one thing. I have looked at a lot of draft/thoroughbreed PMU crosses that were just terrible. Seemed like they got the worst possible results. They sure wernt no warmblood.
