The rain didn't come soon enough to make hay for many ranchers in SE Montana,
plus I just heard up by Circle, MT that the grasshoppers are really bad. The spray doesn't seem to kill them so ranchers have spent a lot of money spraying and it isn't effective. Does anyone know why the spray isn't working this year when it has in the past? One rancher says he has spent $20,000 on spray and there are way too many 'hoppers. They will have grass for the cattle, if the hoppers don't get it first. 😟
 
We have plenty of grass hoppers here in eastern Oregon this year. They are still pretty small. About an inch long or less but growing. There is enough of them that as you walk it looks like the earth is moving under your feet.

Mr. FH uncle always maintained the little ones do more damage (eat more) than the big ones.
 
They are just as thick here in Nebraska. They grow up to three inches and some grow wings. I wish there was a market for them.

Was through circle the other day and there's definitely lots of grasshoppers in the area. Some crop has the first rows in off the edge killed out from the hoppers moving in out of the grass around the border.
 
I think people already are. @ wikiHow they have information on preparing and cooking grasshoppers, plus
recipes. Interesting, but no thank you. Unless maybe, they were dipped in "Chocolate". Naw, don't think so. 🤢
 
As little kids if we were using grasshoppers for bait, my cousin had to bait the hook for me. He never seemed to mind or
poke fun at me for thinking putting a grasshopper on a hook was icky.
 
What information is used in determining drought conditions ? On the coast we definitely get more rain than some inland areas, but we have no snow packs that affect our local creeks/rivers. Even with more rainfall overall all than some areas, we can develop drought conditions.
I know the vegetation here is conditioned to higher levels of moisture, and the impact of dryer conditions, combined with wind has a very negative impact on its survival.
