Position: The Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at Clemson University is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Department Chair/Professor. This is a full-time, 12 month, tenure-track position with at least an 80% administrative appointment. The Department currently consists of 17 faculty, 11 staff, 350 undergraduate students, and 9 graduate students. The Department is in a very positive growth phase as evidenced by the recent addition of two new faculty members, an endowed chair, and four additional faculty positions currently under development. Teaching and research facilities at Clemson include separate beef, dairy, swine, equine, and poultry farms, and an on-campus small animal research and biotechnology facility. Departmental focus areas include a strong emphasis on undergraduate and graduate teaching, and continued development of research programs in animal nutrition and physiology. A departmental focus area was recently launched on assisted reproductive technologies administered by the South Carolina Center for Innovative Reproductive Technologies. The successful candidate will provide leadership to develop and maintain strong research, teaching, and outreach programs. Other responsibilities include the recruitment and evaluation of faculty and staff, fostering strong working relations with other disciplines, commodity/constituency groups, and managing the department's fiscal affairs. Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Animal Science or a related discipline with demonstrated excellence and national recognition in research, teaching or outreach programming. The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, personnel management and consensus building skills, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of groups and individuals including: university administration, government agencies, animal agribusiness constituency groups, other departments, alumni, students and parents. (S)he integrates the teaching, outreach, and applied and basic research, including the use of novel, cutting edge technology for the benefit of animal agriculture systems and biomedical applications, programs of the department; has a strong commitment to diversity; and the ability to positively represent all aspects of the department. In addition, the Chair is proficient in developing, overseeing, and managing budgets and resources effectively, and is instrumental in the building and strengthening of departmental relationships with commodity groups, professional organizations, and other clientele. The Chair reports to the Dean of the College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resources Sciences (CAHNRS).
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
Applicants must have an earned doctorate in Animal Sciences or related discipline at time of application; a strong record of scholarship (research, teaching, or outreach) with overall record tenurable at Full Professor rank; record of administrative success, particularly financial management and allocation of resources; evidence of effective leadership, teamwork, and working with diverse individuals and disciplines. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with faculty, staff, students, the state's animal industries, and other constituency groups.
Preferred qualifications
Preferred qualifications include prior involvement in the Land Grant College system; college research, teaching and/or extension experience with evidence of excellence; demonstrated administrative success with budgeting and personnel; a strong commitment to diversity; and experience in curriculum development and design in both graduate and undergraduate programs. Prior experience in consensus building, strategic planning and implementation, and development activities are also desired.

DEPARTMENT
The 20 faculty and 25 staff members of the Department of Animal Sciences conduct or assist in the conduct of basic and applied research and teaching in genetics and genomics, meat sciences muscle biology, nutrition, reproductive physiology, and applied animal behavior. The department maintains modern laboratory and teaching facilities, a beef cow-calf operation, a dairy herd, experimental animal building, feedlot, feed mill, meats laboratory, and swine center to support its basic and applied teaching and research missions. The faculty in Animal Sciences also participate in major interdisciplinary research programs that involve other CAHNRS departments, the Colleges of Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, and Engineering and Architecture. The Department is involved in teaching 225 undergraduates, thirty graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, and has a strong extension presence.
