EXT Revisited

Just my personal opinion here: The best place for EXT in the pedigree is on the maternal side thatway you kind of know what you are going to get. He improves udders too much just to throw away the whole pedigree is unecessary. I actually think a little EXT in the maternal side is part of the recipe for making good females.

Last I remember about it tho--it takes a little EXT from the paternal side to get it into the maternal side :wink: :P :lol:

Yep- but had to give you a bad time :wink: :P

I've had both good luck and bad with EXT/Emulation/N Bar breeding...I've had some that were really good moderate framed cows- with nice udders-good longevity- that were as quiet as any others in the herd (and I have quiet cows)...But then I've had a couple old EXT bred cows I bought that were complete witches- and didn't stick around long...

In 07 when I went looking for new bulls the one that caught my eye first was a Rito Legacy 3R9 son--that had EXT as a maternal GREAT grand sire--which caused a dilema in my pea brain as to whether I wanted to take a disposition chance- but knowing the maternal qualities of EXT- and liking the double bred Viking GD60 bloodlines also on his maternal side- I decided to take the chance... So far so good....First calves been on the ground a couple of months and look nice- seem quiet...Bull is quiet and easy to handle altho not one that will let you go up and scratch his head and back like the Bannon 730T bull does...
Then I really got brave and AIed the heifers to N Bar Prime Time D806 (twice back to EXT on the maternal side)...Fantastic calving ease--calves had lots of vigor- and sure seem to be growing... Time will tell....
I still think a lot of it depends on the cows some of these bulls are bred to-- breed to a wild cow- get a wild calf/heifer/cow....
