Ranger and vet Dr. Thomas Laube keeps his Galloway herd outside all year round. In winter grass silage is fed and in summer there is pasture growth. He discovered the skin changes, which look like an unusually severe sunburn, only in an almost three-year-old cow. The rest of the approximately 30-strong herd is not affected. When the vet noticed the burns, he immediately stabled the animal and gave painkillers. Since he could not explain these symptoms clearly, he contacted the cattle clinic at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover. Under their guidance, the breeder took various blood samples and skin biopsies to find the cause of these immense burns. But here, too, no clear cause could be found.

But Thomas Laube is not the only farmer who was a little helpless in front of the affected animals. Other farmers also report similar cases. The skin of their animals also changed as follows: the non-pigmented or less pigmented skin is reddened and thickened and thus stands out clearly from the pigmented skin. From about the third day after the appearance of the skin changes, the affected area of skin begins to turn dark and is shed from the underlying skin. The white fur detaches completely from the subcutaneous tissue. This process takes around two weeks.

Typical investigations of a cattle mutilation at the place of discovery in Argentina with veterinary pathologists, police. This is just one example from over 300 cattle mutilations in 2002.
