The calves have been sold, cows worked, and I'm down to wrapping up a few fall projects. The weather has been unbelievably mild, with NO wind, so I've been taking full advantage of it... especially after last winter  :P .

The two-year olds produced nice calves, and only 3/68 didn't breed back :D .

This year's heifer recruits :D

Gotta keep the smart red heads in the herd for leadership  :D

Here's the twin to Justin's 814 :-)

I'm excited to see how the heifers out of the two-year olds turn out, I'll be calving out some of their sisters this spring.

A few of the bred yearlings are serving as babysitters to their younger sisters... I didn't have any older cows handy, so they'll have to do.

I had to put Ed (middle dog) down last week, he had cancer. It sure is tough not having my good friend/co-worker around after 12 years. Ranch dogs have the greatest life though, and that dog fully enjoyed everyday he had.

WR the cattle look in great shape, still shiny and carrying good flesh. Lots of depth on the calves, a nice looking bunch!

Sorry to hear about your old dog, sounds like he had a great life, hope your young dogs keep you looking for bigger and better things, it is easy to get in the rear view rut when you loose a good old dog.

Thanks for the post. :D :D

weird...i was just about to give you a hard time for not posting any pictures lately. :D great looking set of cattle, WR :!: with the winters and springs you have and end up with cattle looking like that in the fall......well, i think you are doing it right. :tiphat:

i like your 814

In my opinionated opinion, your cattle are exactly the type that can do what they are made to do, produce beef.

I would guess it is getting harder to pick bulls needed to improve things there.

Bravo WR. :D

Sorry about your loss of an old friend.

Your cattle are looking great. :D

That is a great shot of the three dogs. :D

Sorry to hear about Ed. :(

We took our pup Ace for his first trip with the big dogs moving cows today. He had fun

Those steer calves are the definition of soggy! Wow! Thick and deep and framey enough to flat out break the scale. If I was a buyer, I'd come'a callin'! :D Hope this coming winter is easier on ya. Maybe the moisture can come as a bunch of soaking rain storms instead of 12 feet of wind and snow. Sorry 'bout your dog. Have a fine fall.

So sorry about Ed...I know how it is to lose a trusted dog...Your cattle look like they enjoyed their summer well...We are just getting started on our weaning/preg fall work...it'll be busy.

Thanks for the compliments :D . It has been a great year, and feed quality this season has definitely helped these cattle along. Believe me, this herd still has its share of holes in it, but after 14 years I think we're on the right track... finally most of the calves are out of home-raised females which seems to help a bunch . Luckily I found a few new Gelbvieh sources to check out, so I plan on "interviewing" them soon... I hate to lose that breed's influence in these cattle.

Dylan, you're exactly right. In the past I've been guilty of focusing on what a horse/pup couldn't do well, always comparing it to its predecessors. I'm finally learning all animals have something they'll do better than the rest, and finding and working with that talent becomes the fun part... especially when you've got me as your handicapped trainer  :D .

Big Muddy, I'm glad your pup had a fun time. I'm not ready for another one yet, but I'm thinking next spring. My "young" dog is going to be 8, so I probably better get going on that project .

And Leanin' H, it was closer to 15 feet, but who's counting  ???

I' jealous I'm still shipping, pregging won't be done until early Nov, and nothing is causght up   . Calves sure look like the kind anyone needs. It has been mild here also. Sorry about your dog, but glad you enjoyed each other for 12 years.

I'm late in posting. Was gone all yesterday til this evening...
Your cattle look nice and bloomy and let me add 'soggy' along
with the others who called them that.
Sorry about your dog, he sure looks like he was a wise fellow
in that picture. Which, by the way, is good enough to frame.
Hard to lose those four-legged good ole partners and darn good friends.

BTW, did fixing your saddle last year help? If you said, I don't
recall seeing it.

WR, in my biased opinion I agree with your sentiments regarding the value of some Gelbvieh influence.

As regards the rear view rut, good for you!!! :D It is the only way forward! :D
