Another good round, the .257 Roberts, was developed at about the same timeframe.

I can see the .250 Savage (250-3000) becoming obsolete.

I wouldn't mind owning an older Model 99 with the straight stock (as opposed to the pistol grip one).

I know shot placement is generally 90% of the equation, but I have a friend who uses a .243 and seems the deer run further and have less of a blood trail at times than I like. One deer with a double lung shot ran over 100 yds and there was over 50 yds stretch with just one small speck of blood noted.

I have a .270 that I think is perfect for deer around here.

My 7 mm mag (purchased for elk) is more than plenty but I like the distance and trajectory.

i have one that savage serial no's say is 1918 or 1919 that has the pistol grip stock. have never seen a straight stock 99,not saying they don't exist, just never seen one. some one could make some money building synthetic replacement stocks for the 99

I have found that a Ranch Hand grille guard and front bumper replacement on an Expedition, F250, or F550 work exceedingly well when wanting to exterminate Bambi. No optics required, and no adjustment for distance or wind needed, either. No need to buy ammo, camo clothing, orange vests/hats, hunting boots, permits or licenses. Plus, the Game Warden doesn't come out and ruin your day!

reminds me of a friend many moons ago.

He hit a huge buck in the road and messed up his truck. When the trooper came to write the accident he asked my friend how fast he was going.

My friend asked back: "When I saw him, or when I hit him"?

Of course the trooper looked confused and said "Both".

My friend said he was going 40mph when he saw him, and 60mph when he hit him.

We found out last night that one of my son's classmates nailed a deer while driving home last night from football practice. The kid had a pretty nice Jeep CJ or whatever they are nowadays, probably only 5 or 6 years old. From what we heard the Jeep was totaled. The boy is OK, just got banged up a little bit. The boy's stepmother was always against him driving the Jeep to school, as she thought it wasn't enough protection if something happened. Sounds like the stepmom will get her way, as last night the Dad called me and wanted to know where I bought my Ranch Hand's at and wanted an idea of what they cost.

Sounds like the South Dakota sneak.

About 35 years ago in the Rapid City Journal, there was a story about a man driving a pickup truck at night. He saw two jack rabbits on the highway
so increased his speed to see if he could kill them both. The two white rabbits turned out to be two stocking legs of a black horse. The horse was killed,
and the pickup was totaled. :?

I've been lucky as the only rabbits I have hit were rabbits,
Sign me me up with BMR; 30-30 Marlin lever action, open sights. After the first shot, if they ain't dead they are deaf... I don't shoot deer every year, but I've got a couple at pert' near 300 yards and the blood trail was laying under the carcass. Except the little bit in front of it.

illegal to use anything under .24 cal. on big game here, but am curious as to what bullet you are using on deer?

I've killed cariboo, moose, deer, black bear, wolves, beaver, coyotes, beef and even stunned a few muskrats with my Model 700 22-250. 55 grain factory loads. Shot placement is a lot better than shocking power.

Ask pups and bucks about it's accuracy on headshot birds at 250 yards.
