Scotland scientists: Feed bins source of ongoing BSE cases
by Pete Hisey on 12/15/2005 for Meatingplace.com
Feed bins that haven't been cleaned in years, even decades, may be the source of bovine spongiform encephalopathy infections in cattle born after the United Kingdom instituted a feed ban on ruminant protein fed to cattle in 1996, veterinary scientists say.
According to The Scotsman, Scotland's chief veterinary officer, Charles Milne, said that nine herds in parts of England and Wales have produced 20 cases of BSE in so-called BARB (born after reinforced ban) animals.
"In experiments, as little as one milligram of BSE-infected brain tissue has been enough to infect a calf," Milne said. "In some of those herds, feed was stored in feed bins that were in use before August 1996 and had never been cleaned." Milne added that while risk of infection was extremely low, feed bins should nevertheless be regularly and thoroughly cleaned, particularly if they were in use before 1996.
