I live in Louisiana and I am looking for some information on getting a job at a feedyard. I have heard that feed yards in alberta are hiring just about anyone right now but was wondering if anyone had any more information about it. I have worked sale barns for 4 years and have some experience spotting and doctoring cattle but was wondering if there were any other qualifications I would need. Would I have to have my own horses or does the feedyard supply them. Thanks in advance.

There are many jobs in Alberta, 1 qualification is you need to be able to take the weather. We do get winter here.

I'm not sure what it takes to get a working visa but check at the gov't web sites.

Horses are usually supplied by the checker.

try www.gov.ab.ca not sure if that is exactly right, but it's some variation. www.gc.ca is the feds.

If your looking into a feed lot job in Alta..MAKE SURE the employer suppys a place for you to live, theres NO housing in Alta.

We also have stores that can equip you for the weather. Alta. winter isn't so bad once your used to it.All of our Dr.s in our small town are from South Africa, they now love the winter.I'll check our paper for you,and let you know if theres anything.

Hi get ahold of Northern Rancher. He can give you the names of some feedlots in AB that are hiring.

Feedyard jobs are plentiful in the plains states. If you start in Louisiana you'll drive past mulitple feedlots in the plains states that are in need of help before you reach Alberta. If it's Alberta you're after, then Alberta it is!!

Thanks for all the replies. I would prefer to stay in the US but if all else fails I would definitely consider Alberta. High Plains, do you know how I could find and get in contact with feedlots that are hiring without have to go up there. I ask this because I would at least a few leads before I make the long trip up there. Thanks all.

Go to www.kla.org and they will have a feedyard map under feeding cattle in kansas that gives contact info for a lot of the yards. You should be able to find something there.

Bullman315 if you're checking jobs at feedlots, look for one that has a good schedule for days off. Many of them around here are on a rotation that only gives you every third weekend, with some weekdays off in between, and some of them would prefer not to give you that. The one I work at has two days off during the week one week and the next weekend off, so in other words, every second weekend off. Feedlot burnout happens fast if you don't get any days off, or don't have a set schedule to count on. You will need your own horses, but should get paid a horse allowance for using them, and lots of guys supplement their income riding young horses for other people. Keep in mind that a really green horse has no place at the lot, as there is too much going on for a young horse to deal with physically and mentally. With a good crew the feedlot isn't too bad a place to work. Hope this helps.

The Livestock Weekly usually has several ads every week for pen riders. I only see one in the current online issue, though:

Experienced cowboy needed at Dimmitt Feed Yard. Must have own horses and tack. Come by to see: Scoty Edwards 806/647-2106

It's worth a subscription at $30/year. One of the best weekly livestock papers in the business, in my opinion.

I'd suggest trying Dimmitt before you go all the way to Alberta. If it's not cold enough at Dimmitt, you can still stop at Cactus or Dalhart. That should be enough to make you forget about Alberta.

I AGREE WITH TEXAN, THERE ARE JOBS IN LIVESTOCKWEEKLY.COM, ALMOST EVERY WEEK FOR PEN RIDERS. MOST IN TEXAS WILL PROVIDE UPKEEP FOR 2 HORSES. I DONT KNOW IF YOU HAVE RODE PENS BEFORE, BUT IT IS SLOW, EASY AND SMOOTH. NOTHING WILL GET YOU RUN OFF FASTER THAN CHOUSING CATTLE UNNECESSARILY.

hello
if you want to move to the panhandle there are sevaral feedyards here and there is at least one looking for a pen rider evey day
the man that owns the ranch we live on is looking for a pen rider at his feedyard in Hart Texas thats not far south of here

the man you need to talk to is Dennis Hill
the # 806-938-2156
i hope this helps

Its like Mrs Greg said, make sure the job includes houseing because there is no houseing in Alberta. Do you really want to live in a feedlot?
Your not going to get rich working in a feedlot up here.
Depending on the area some places are really expensive to live in up here.
There is a reason why some feedlots up here are always looking for riders.
Haha There is a feedlot over by Lethbridge that has a 100% turnover rate. About a year ago they pis$ed off one of there men so bad that he took a front end loader and went on a rampage smashing through the pens and busting down all the fences
You know even before he big boom here in Alberta a lot of these feedlots still couldnt keep a man for very long. There is a reason for it.
Honestly I dont know why anybody would want to work in a feedlot anyway. I wouldnt travel 3000 miles to do it.
