Anybody have experience with a pneumatic post driver? I'm considering getting one to install wooden line posts and possibly 1-1/4" fiberglass posts.

Seems to be a number of options out there, from cheap to expensive. I've learned over the years that it is generally cheaper to by quality the first time.

Any suggestions?

You could get a nice easy pnuematic post driver but you'd sure miss all the pleasure and character building that comes with an old heavy manual one! I've never tried anything else, so I'm not much help! :D Let me know how it works for ya!

this spring i was helping a neighbor replace river gaps and he had a hydraulic pounder on the front of a tractor, and i'll tell ya what.....i want one! wood, steel, doesn't matter...line it up and giv'er about 3-4 wacks and move on. hell, i think there is a pounder on the market that will drive RR ties  not sure if its a whole lot faster due to having to positon the tractor for every post, but you do feel much fresher at the end of the day :D :D

I borrowed an auger for the front of my skid steer. I can see me putting in 100"s of post in the next week or two. I've got an old 3 point mount post driver it will drive wood posts up to about 5 inch diameter. Works best when the ground is soft.

a wheatheart Heavy Hitter will drive just about anything-has a post grabber so pretty safe to run-you can get them with a hydraulic auger so you can drill a pilot hole too.

That's my favourite brand of pounder - puts in some pretty big stuff in the ground - as far as I am concerned it is the only one on the market

When the ground is soft enough to use a post driver, you can get away with just using a front end loader on a 80+hp tractor. I have an Anbo Root Rake/Grapple, and its very heavy so I use it, and just pound the posts in that way. It takes 2 people and about 2 minutes per post.

If you dont have a heavy front implement, you can just use your regular bucket on your FEL, and fill it with dirt or sand to add weight and it will usually push in just about any post you need to.

Saves alot of money from buying something new, and the job is done just as quickly.

A loader won't put them in as straight or as easily as a good pounder on tougher ground.

I think the question was about those hand held air pounder mostly for steel posts. I have only seen the ads. :?
