Just about the earliest I have ever finished, the last barley went in on the 11th and some harrowing I did on the 12th.

This will be my fourth year with no inorganic fertilizer and hopefully my third with no herbicides, I monitor that as the season goes.

A little rain is falling, life is good. :)
 
We have so much water in the fields that seeding hasn't even started yet,and theres alot of cranky farmers,its getting late.

Greg finally made it into our river pasture this week,roads were flooded by the river.We have a piece of island that he says is totally under water,and alot of the countryside from our peak is also under water.At the bottom of our land across the river is a relative of gregs,her place darn near flooded and she said last time the Battle River was that high was 1944 :shock:
 
Finished seeding here. Earliest I ever seeded was March 27. Latest was
June 20th. Some years its tough to get anything in. When the frost leaves late and rains come early or too much it doesn't leave much time to get seeded.
 
Most around here are done or at least have a good portion seeded...Many were lucky enough to beat the 1.5 to 2 inches of rain we got last week- which sure should give things a good start... Some of the river bottom folks are irrigating the grass (blue joint and Garrison mostly) hay meadows, which take lots of water....
 
planters running hard right now some are still trying to finnish corn planting some corn in the area is already a foot tall. some beans starting to come up also. ive seen a few acres of hay being put up, by what i see the yields are way down. the cold a few weeks back killed a lot of alfalfa. my hay looks like it will be about half of normal for the first cutting. already have some people offering $3.oo for first cutting grass.
 
This is the first time we have had two corn planters going - - - My son was at an auction and felt a 12 row JD was going to cheap - - - it was already set up for no till so he bought it. ( $12,000.00)

With the weather we had had it was a great investment. He spent about $3,000.00 on it before we went to the field ( new openers, serviced the row units, etc.) and it went over about 500 acres with no breakdowns.

We have about 50 acres in small plots that we planted around but other than that we are all in the ground - - - about 1,000 acres of corn and about 850 of soybeans ( drilled)

The new alfalfe we put out about two weeks ago is looking good and Brandon already baled some marginal hay he is going to go back and notill corn into. Hay looks terrible here - - - I hope it gets better with a little warmth. They are calling for a hard frost Wed night - - - I just hope they miss it

George I know a lot depends on the weather but what is the latest you could plant corn (no till) and expect a reasonable yield on good land. BTW I live in TN.
 
Yikes George, a frost? Our forcasted low would be around 47 and we have had plenty of warmth (92 today).. What we need is water.. Hasn't rained for 3 weeks and has been hot and windy.. Forcast is on for tomorrow bringing a 1/4 inch, hoping that we get that much as it seems to keep petering out at the Iowa border.. That is our general trend in a "dry" year for this area.. So strange, I know the farm ground around where I sent my steers is underwater right now, leeves busted, rivers and creeks over the banks.. ThanI hear Denny up ion Minni is underwater and southern Illinois is wet and than there is us up here..... Ma nature is a little strange...


WE have no tilled here as late as End of May into Rye stands for short season silage corn but that is on marginal ground.. I think we no tilled into some Alfalfa around there for combining a few years ago after first cutting and it yielded with the other corn just fine... So much depends on timely moisture and good heat when you plant the stuff.

Were getting pretty dry here also it's either all or nothing seems lately the rain is missing us.
 
Just got our spring wheat in.... Lots of water holes to plant around this year... Hubby got stuck last night again... I think this is the latest we have planted spring wheat...And now we are planting spring wheat with alfalfla.... Then it's on to corn..... Have planted corn as late as the 4th of July and it made corn. Alfalfla looks great here... Will be cutting as early as the first of June....... That will be a first....
 
We could probably go till about the 10th of June and still have a decent crop, but I think it would still be better in the ground.

The frost predicted for last night did not occur ( thank God) but it was 42 when I went out to feed this morning and it was only about 62 for a high today - - - they are calling for the 80s again this weekend - - - crazy weather for sure!
 
I finished planting alfalfa and alfalfa grass last friday, Sunday it rained a half of inch 3 miles north of us and didn't rain enough here to get your shirt wet. Been working all week to get the irrigation going but could sure use some help from above. Its been getting up into the eighties during the day with thirty mile an hour wind and dropping as low as thirty at night. The grass is going to hell fast but the hay ground still looks pretty good where ever I can irrigate it anyway. Sure glad this business is so easy :wink:
 
We've been having lows in the upper 30s or lower 40s every night this week with highs in the mid 60s - - - crops are living but in a survival mode - - - we are normally about 20 degrees higher on both ends. We have been getting rain about every third day but we need heat units to go with the moisture.

At least we have not gotten the frost they keep forcasting.

My wife normally mows the lawn at least once a week this time of year - - -so far she has only mowed once this year! At least she has saved some gas.
