I was checking on how the local fire in the Missouri Breaks (Duck Creek Fire) is doing and found these statistics-- looks to be shaping up to be another fire year alto no where near as bad as 2000 or 2006....The local fire was considered over 90% contained this morning- with the belief they could consider it out today....

2008 (1/1/08 - 8/1/08 )
Fires: 53,581
Acres: 3,813,236

2007 (1/1/07 - 8/1/07)

Acres: 5,046,917

2006 (1/1/06 - 8/1/06)
Fires: 70,608
Acres: 5,586,914

2005 (1/1/05 - 8/1/05)
Fires: 38,188
Acres: 4,641,496

2004 (1/1/04 - 8/1/04)

Do you have access to the numbers for 1988, OT?
That was really a bad year for fires--I was just wondering how
that year compared.

I used to buy some horses for resale every year and I had purchased one
from a neighbor that a fellow in Big Sky was trying out. He had to fly home on short notice. Home was back east somewhere. One of the gals that was in on our horse tradin' heard the fire was just over the hill from
Big Sky so she got up at 4 am and drove over there to get the horse home.

Kinda lucky for me, as I had always liked that horse and I told her before we let someone else take him and try him, that I was going to ride him.
I wound up keeping him for myself. He was a good horse and so nice to ride. He was big, but not bulky and so good on his feet. He was a Moon Hancock. I had him for many years.

I couldn't find it listed on that site but did find that 1988 was a big year for wildfires in the western United States, with more than 72,000 fires reported during the year, including 300 rated as major

A total of 793,880 acres (3,213 km²), or roughly 36 percent of Yellowstone park was affected by the wildfires with over 1.4 million acres burned in just the Yellowstone area.....

The 10 year average for the country is

1998 - 2008
Fires: 52,581
Acres: 3,813,236

It has been pretty quiet around here. So far.

We actually had a storm just move in- without any lightning or thunder  Nice little shower going on-- and the way the radar looks it could go on all night.... :D

Just stopped baleing for the night and was pulling out of the field when it started to shower. It could rain all night and all day tomorrow for the little bit of hay that is still on the ground. :D

Well fire season is a understatement and a dirty word here in california,it's been just terrible.Don't have exact figures, but it's pretty obvious were on fire big time!Real hot and dry, rivers, lakes, stream, and any reserviors are at a all time low.Suppose to get a few thunder showers this coming week, but it probably will bring more lightening and not much moisture  .We sure could use a break.Well off to cut another field while theres still a little feed to be had out there.Hope this day finds everyone well.Talk at ya' later.Solomon. 8)

That little storm last night sure dropped our fire danger for a couple of days-- we got .3 - and it sounds like most the northeast corner of the state picked up some...Last night when I looked at the radar it was raining everywhere from Miles City north up into Canada...

Supposed to be fairly cool- high 70's, low 80's for a couple of days too..

We had a doozie of a storm last nite. Prob got about 3/4" rain in about a 30 minute time. Then just misty all nite thereafter.
