For The Birders

Hi all, I'm from New England and now live near Seattle, so the only time I see magpies is when I'm horse camping in eastern Washington. I love seeing them, I never knew they were such pests. Are they the equivalent of blue jays or maybe crows?

I dont know too much about blue jays but i would have to say magpies are worse than crows.(might be a toss up)magpies eat more cat food than the cats do.I had to start feeding the cats in a old building here ,so they couldnt steal all the food. Worked for a little while then they started going onto the old building thro a broken window and hopping quite a ways to get the food.had to board up the window.

Your pictures are amazing. Photography for me started out as a hobby and ended up being a passion. I have upgraded cameras a few times now and am looking to do so again soon. A photographer told me you take thousands for a handful of photos that take your or someone elses breath away. You learn from the ones that aren't the best and keep clicking.

Thank you for sharing your pictures. It reminds me to keep saving for that camera!! :)

When Dad had all his bird feeders up, he'd put them on a platform, and build a wire cage to put over them with holes small enough for the chickadees to get through, but not the larger birds like sparrows and magpies. It saved the bird seed for the intended guests. I don't know what that wire is called, but the spaces were rectangular, about an inch high and two inches wide. The platform allowed the birds to land on the edges and then walk through the mesh.

You have such a variety of birds! Lucky you! The cardinal is such a vivid red. We just have chickadees, sparrows, ravens, magpies, and the odd blue jay. Thanks for the pix.

Ah, cutterone, now you're making me homesick for New England. That's a happy variety of birds you get to see. Nice job on the photos.
This bird is new to me, has anyone seen one of these?

While I was scrolling thro the pics i was thinkin the same things as Shelly was...
And I was also thinking that if we had that many woodpeckers here i would have to start wearing wooden shoes..to keep the woodpeckers away from my head.. :)

I'll swap you magpies for crows anyday :D
We don't see to many magpies here. I miss them. :(
Keep your gophers though. I don't miss them. :P
You miss Magpies :???: I'll send you ours, ALL of them :? Grrrr, can't feed cats or dogs with Magpies around. In the morning thier scawking is soooooooo annoying.Crows are no where near as bad as the magpies. We also get blackbirds and barn swallows, tow more kinda pain in the butt birds. We only get the bluejays in spring and fall and love the little guys. Robins and Oriles are other pretty summer birds we get.

Emma I was gonna say that bird was an undercover FBI agent..See the strings from his ear piece?

Yep send me the Magpies :D . I hate crows, I find they make way more annoying noise than magpies  . Send the swallows too! :D
I haven't seen a bluejay in forever. Lots of grey jays here though.
Had a new bird arrive at me feeder this morning. Anyone know what this is?

With all the bird pictures and some little ones urging I ventured out in the wind and cold. The birds must have been nestled down out of this wind. However, we did come across some feathers in a tumbleweed.

Hey, cutterone, it IS a black-crown heron. Thanks for identifying it for me. I've seen it in San Diego every time I've been this winter and no one has been able to tell me what it was. I never knew it was common throughout the country. It's a funny bird, almost always in this tree during the day and on a piling at the marina in the evening, and it always just stares and waits for me to leave.
Yeah, Les, it's a fed! I hadn't noticed. No wonder it's always hanging around Shelter Island. :-)

OK, I decided I better join in...

Here is a quail from this summer
