For Valentine's Day----how did you meet??

Just thought I would post this so that we can all reminesce about how we met that "special someone"!! soooooo, Let's hear it!! :D :D

Cowboyup and I met while I was playing designated driver for a few of my designated drunk friends...I was rebuilding my life with 2 small children after a nasty divorce and was in no way, shape or form looking for a relationship, but.......when I saw my Jesse and he smiled....that smile spoke volumes and still does....open, honest, "this is me...no holds barred, no games"!!! The best part was when he asked me about my kids..and did not take off running when i told him about me and my family (you see, I had started weeding out the "riff-raff" by immediately mentioning my 2 little ones...usually, they would run in the other direction as quickly as their legs could carry them :wink: )!! 5 weeks after we met, he proposed and 9 months later we were married.
 
We met after a a function in church when I was 15. Got married 1 week after high school graduation. It was his quiet, kind attitude that won me over.
 
Mr Lilly and I went to high school together. He was two years ahead of me. He'd asked me out several times while I was dating someone else. He was persistant tho. We didn't actually start datin until after he graduated. One rainy night in December 1982, I seen him drive by where we were all sittin on the drag downtown main street. Ended up stopping, and he asked for my phone number. I wrote it down on a Corn Dog wrapper. He called the next evenin, and asked me out to the picture show and dinner. I told him, he had to come to the house n meet mama n daddy before hand, cuz that was the rules.....so he showed up....only it was mid afternoon. He sat and talked to my folks all afternoon. Then went home to change, and came back. We dated the rest of my junior year and senior year of highschool, then married in August after I graduated in May.
While we were datin, we spent many long nights at the race track, that was the only time I didnt hafta be home by 11 pm. He raced nearly every saturday night, and most nights it would be 1 or 2 in the mornin before the races were over, then the drive home. His dad went most of the time, and ya just DID NOT come home and NOT go to the coffee shop to rehash the race. So it was usually somewhere along 4 am when I'd get home. Always had to go into mom n dad's room and tell em "I'm home"
 
I met my husband at the local barn dance. A girl friend wanted me to see this really cool guy she liked. (Roscoe's cousin) So I climbed upon the rail around the dance floor to look at this cool guy. And this young man in a black cowboy hat grabbed my elbow to steady me and Said." Young lady your going to fall!" And I did. Fell in love. Wasn't even looking for a fellow. I was there to dance and have fun......... Darndest thing!!!!!!!!!!
 
These are neat. Good idea, ranchwife.

The lesser half and I met at a mutual friend's birthday party at the beginning of our sophomore year of college. He was conspicuously cheating at cards (hiding point cards in his hat band, that kind of thing) and I was charmed.
We kind of hung out in the same crowd, so we played a lot of pool together, ate lunch in the cafeteria now and again, that sort of thing for that whole first semester.

Then a few days before Christmas break he said, "So Erin...When are you going to go out with me?"
"Whenever you get around to asking..."

Finals were over Thursday afternoon, we had our date (Pizza Hut and The Three Musketeers at the theater) and I went home, 350 miles away, for the next three weeks.

We ran up a fairly hefty phone bill, but were going steady by the time I got back to school.

Twelve years later, he tells people he had to marry me because I kept whoopin' him in pool. ;)
 
I went to 8th grade with my husband and then moved to a different town for Freshman year (my dad was in the construction business). Then we moved back in my Sophomore year. My husband lived on a ranch and drove a neighbor kid to school because he had a pickup. My husband had a drivers license but no wheels. I started dating the kid that owned the pickup and he always had to have driver...so we 3 were together a lot and of course he couldn't pick up a girl walking to school because I got picked up...and the kid that owned the pickup, his folks wouldn't allow 4 in the front. So in our Junior year, we started dating and dated through our Senior year and got married. Everyone said it couldn't last. That was 43 years ago.

He's a good one, I'd never let him go. I have been truly blessed. He is the kindest, most humble man I have ever known. :heart:
 
I'll ad mine in here.
I was showing the universities shorthorns and was short a hand. It was late july. Herdsman said he knows this feller that needs 2 credits to complete his degree. Herdsman called him. Turns out, hubby to be was dragging a pot thru Nebraska headed east. 2 days later he showed up in the black GMC I posted in the ugly truck contest and a bumper pull trailer. He was 4 hours late. I had everything setting outside the barn waiting to be loaded cept the straw. He got out of the truck and was wearing a ragged old shirt that had a donkey on it with lipmarks in it's behind. Shirt said "read my lips". Belt buckle had a horned hereford on it and the black stetson was in bad shape. He spoke and I kept walking...I don't like to be late. I climbed into the hay mow and started tossing straw bales at him. He never flinched.
He has this look, like a wooped little puppy. For some reason that look and his green eyes made me melt. Still does, no matter haw bad things get. One of those soft looks and I'm mush.
We spent the next 10 weeks dragging that string of OSU shorthorns thru 3 states worth of county fairs. Only been apart for 10 day in a row since. That was when he was in Denver 3 years ago.

He proposed Christmas Eve that year we met. He was trucking, came home a day early to find me in the barn babying a young herd bull prospect. He climbed in the pen with me and we were discussing his recent 3 day jont in the KW. Next thing I know I hear a clink in the hair of this bull. I look down to find a ring. Rest is history. Some of that history is rough and ragged, but will make for an interesting story for the grandkids someday.
Thanks for the memories RanchWife. I need that seeing that hubby is ironically in the KW today.
 
I met Mrs. freelance when we were both cutting class and smoking cigarettes in high school. Who says smoking and juvenile delinquency can't lead to anything good?
 
I'd been dating a girl and she of course got to know a good friend who I always hung around with. Few weeks later he asked me if I was still going out with her. I told him no and he replies, "Good, cuz I got a date with her!"

They stayed together and got engaged and I always told her that I found her a husband so she had to find me a wife. She brought a girl to the bar we were hanging out at, after working at the sale barn. This girl walks in with a yellow tank top with an 8 ball on the front. I think it was a second or two before I seen her face! We sat and visited for several hours and everything seemed to click. We were engaged 2 months later and married 6 months later, And everybody said, "It will never last". It has for 15 wonderful years and 12, kind'a scary ones! :shock: :lol:

She's still my Valentine, but she ain't romantic a bit. Don't like me to give her flowers, but I still got her some anyways. Silk, as she prefers. :oops:

She also got a new wedding ring with a huge saphire and two diamonds as she "lost" her other one, years ago. Yeah, right. :wink:
 
I've known my wife all my life-her brother and I played on the same line in hockey for years so I kept pretty close tabs on her-finally got enough courage-and beer in me-to ask her out. I t was amazing how the dynamics changed at her house when I went from her brothers crazy right winger to their daughters boyfriend-we've been together 23 years and I wouldn't change a thing.
 
I had moved from the City of Calgary to small town,because my father was working at the local power plant.I had seen this Cowboy around town BUT had NO interest.I went with another girl from school to a basketball game and she had a huge crush on Greg.After the game she talked me into going with her,Greg and Gregs friend out for a drive in country.We stopped and were sitting on endgate of truck and I took Gregs cowboy hat off and threw it in ditch :shock: {NOW I KNOW BETTER}Greg said thats when he knew we were going to be together!!! That was 29 years ago and we've been married 27. Greg is quiet,very kind,great with his animals,two children,his future daughter -in -law has a special place in his heart because she gave him his darling grandson.I've been very lucky that he gave a silly city girl a chance!
 
I met my husband at a very unromantic water main break on campus. He and his buddy were observing it and probably discussing flow rates, water pressure, etc.
It was not love at first sight. The only memorable thing was he played a trick on me. Amazing how things can develop from nothing! We've had 46 good years together for which we thank the Lord.
 
Peach Blossom is six years younger than me, and was in the same class as my middle sister. They were good friends, and as time passed, I started noticing that my sister's friend was pretty cute and a real handy cowgirl. The only problem was, she always had a boyfriend, and I watched as she progressed through about four of them.

During June of 1978, Peach Blossom sang for the wedding of a local girl. My sister had a good visit with her there, and came home with the news, "Peach Blossom has just broke up with the boyfriend she's had for the past two years. You better get on that project, Soapweed."

Sounded like pretty good advice to me, so shortly thereafter I made a phone call to her family. This call was "supposedly" to trade horses with her step-dad, but Fate intervened. He wasn't home, but Peach Blossom was. We made small talk about horses and ranching, and I worked up my nerve to see if she would like to go to the dance the following Saturday night. I was quite shocked when she said she would.

As luck would have it, another charming young lady from Colorado was visiting her grandparents, and she had been to our ranch earlier in the week to ride horses. I had kind of mentioned the dance to her, also, and had suggested that she could go along if she liked. She had okayed the idea, so after Peach Blossom also accepted, I quickly found a friend to go along so we could double-date. He escorted the Colorado girl, and Peachie was with me. We ended up going to the movie "The Apple Dumpling Gang" and then attended an hour or so of local stock car racing before the dance got started. Another memory of the evening is Peach Blossom losing her contact on the dance floor. Fortunately, it was just before intermission, and luckily we found it before it got tromped on.

We dated that summer, and we announced our engagement in mid October. We tied the knot on the 23rd of June, 1979, almost 27 years ago. It was the best thing I ever did. I read somewhere that married men are the happiest, single women are next, followed by married women, and single men are the unhappiest. When we got hitched, I apologized to her for taking her down one notch so I could go up three notches. She took it in friendly fashion.

I met my wife when she was 14 her cousin had a crush on me and I was hauling hay near their place they would walk down to say Hi everyload.The following spring 1984 I went to a teen dance at a little bar here and there she was I was calveing cows for the man I worked for so I kept leaveing to check and then would come back and dance.We dated for the next 3 years then I went to college and we broke up.I got married as did she then I got divorced and so did she.New Years Eve 1990 I was back at the same bar as the teen dance and there she was we danced and have been together ever since.We will be married 14 year's this summer.
 
In the late winter of '86 I met Mrs. Haytrucker; but I sure didn't know it at the time. I recall a (no longer exists) fun spot downtown, there in Alliance; I was looking for a job and her friend was cute.
I went to work for the future father-in-law farming for a couple years, then I moved to Colorado following the gal-of the-moment. After a year (almost) of that I moved back to the HUSKER state, and went to work for a neighbor. Two of the best moves I have made; ever. I started dating the former boss' daughter; and I worked for the outfit where I learned the most about cattle; born to gone.
Since December 2, 1989 we have undergone this journey together.
Thanks for the chance to remember some good times...
 
We met at the local watering hole across the street from the fun spot in Alliance that no longer exists.A fight broke out and everyone jumped to the floor to watch except for me and her .She got up on the other end of the bar and sat down beside me. The next week I did'nt show up as we were in harvest so she called her moms friend Gail who told her how to get out to our place the next day.S he rode with me that afternoon in the combine and later that night we went out to Pizza Hut. I had to cancel a blind date that a friend had set up for me that eveing and so glad that I did.
 
When two people grow up in the same tiny town (maybe 275 people back then), you don't "meet".......you get better acquainted.

With me being four years younger, we weren't in high school at the same time......and I wasn't really dating at age 14.......just hung out with some kids whose older siblings had cars.....it's a wonder we all lived through the fun we had. That was a different crowd than my future spouse ran with.

Guess we probably got together hanging around town, or at a dance. I do recall that when asked to "waltz", I was a little crushed because I didn't know how to waltz......but learned! Most time together was going to dances and movies, analyzing our friends personalities, or with our families.

Probably the time I really knew he was "mr. right" was the day of the funeral of my one year younger sister who died of cancer after a long illness. Something just clicked amidst the shock and grief of her death. I had believed she was going to be an invalid "for life", not understanding that she was dying. Didn't handle that very well.

Helping care for younger siblings and cousins made me think I could handle marriage easily.......so, at age not quite seventeen, I persuaded my parents of that, and added the promise that I would finish my last year of highschool after we married. So, May 26, 1957 we were married and I did graduate from high school the following year.

Almost 49 years later, I can honestly say we both think it has been worth it, bad times (no running water until mid 1961 when we had a two and a half year old and a six month old in CLOTH diapers with water only available by bucket out of a cistern!) and good (healthy kids).

My only regret, and maybe I don't really regret it, but think life might have been easier with "book learning" versus "the hard way", is that we didn't go to college, though his parents offered to send us. We felt we needed to settle down and help out on the ranch, and sure don't regret that.

Didn't really celebrate Valentines Day in a traditional way.....just went to our little high schools' boys basketball games. I've mentioned before that there are only 12 boys in grades 7-12, and 11 are on the team. Up and down for size and talent (4' 9" to two at 6' 4") all play on both jv and varsity, and goal is to have some fun. They won both games, by some miracle. Some played very well......some had an off night......but I'm proud of them all and it was a good way to celebrate Valentines Day, IMO.
