i have planted the purple top turnips last year, cows went nuts over them, ate the tops then the tuburs,i also had graza radish and pearl millet mixed in, told the neighbors i was raising marinated beef  was kinda funny to watch when i chisled the feild the cows were right behind me looking for missed turnips,i am gonna plant them again,i planted peas and tricolte first, baled that off the 4 of july then planted the turnips, radish and millet and cut it once for hay due to all the rain and then i grazed it,was about 3 ft when i turned the cows in

I think its too late this year, I have planted some before,I dont remember the variety but they did good and make good cow feed,I think the tops are around 25% protein and the roots higher, cows really like em.........but I plant oats/wheat instead still fair cattle feed and a good deer forage for the hunters.
good luck

PS I should have stated they are a fall forage crop around here.

Oh I am thinking about march 15th or so.

I have a small plot of new ground that most of the brush has been cut off of and it was grazed last year to control weeds and brush. has not been grubbed or tilled. this fall I have fed the horses hay on it for the organic material, the manure and the grass seed.

I am thinking about a spring crop of turnips and clover to build the land. graze one time probably with the cows

then in summer a millet or sorghum and some brassicas especially tillage radish. then graze one time probably with the cows

then in the fall hairy vetch and cool season grasses and leave it alone til grass is ready in the spring.

How are you going to plant the seed,I would'nt mind finding a good used "no till" and just drilling it into sudan stubble,if I have to do much field work,it just aint worth it just let the cattle graze the stubble but with a no till you could sure do some good if you got moisture..................good luck

way too rough and stumpy for a no till drill. have access to one at work but would not use it in this spot.

I am thinking I am going to use a spike tooth aerator and broadcast. that is one reason I don't want to pay a fortune for seed. I know I am going ot have some seed loss. the area is small however.

thanks but should not be an issue.....
area of concern is but one small piece of new ground. I move cattle every couple of days and it is rare for them to be in one spot more than a week.
alos keep a pretty good mineral in front of them at all times.
I know thiamin is not a mineral but i am not anticipating a monoculture situation either.

i just don't know anything aobut the varieties of forage turnips and there are a lot of differnet ones all claiming to be the best.
