Funny But Pathetic

I had an Ag. Society meeting tonight-one of our members runs a herd of SimmX cows along the main highway into town from the west. He was cleaning out his shelter belts and dumping the brush out in his pasture. This guy is a good stockman-his cattle are always in good shape. Well the other day the S.P.C.A shows up on his doorstep. seems he was reported that he was feeding his animals sticks. Everybody got talking and it seems that if you live anywhere along a major road you get turned in for a perceived abuse sooner or later. I know some idiot turned me in about twenty years ago-the Mounties came out but he agreed that if anything they were too fat lol. He said it was a neighbor with a grudge-I said better charge me with assault because it's not going to be pretty lol. For some reason he wouldn't give me the guys name. It sounds like no matter how ridiculous the accusation they have to check them all out.
 
Got a friend that has fibreglass horse and calf on a track so he can practice calf roping. You can see this rig when you drive by on the highway. One day his kids washed all the horse blankets and hung them on the practice "horse" to dry. He got a call from SPCA about leaving a horse tied out in the hot sun with a blanket on. He cussed out this do gooder on the phone and told them he would do what he wanted with his horses- "come and try to charge me".
It took these people about an hour to drive out to his place, when they turned in the drive he was beating his "horse" with a 2 by 4. By the time he got done explaining about how passers-by should mind their own business if they don't know the facts, the SPCA folks were quite apologetic
 
That is pretty pathetic, seems everybody is an expert at stuff they know nothing about. Take road maintenance for instance.......... 99% of the population has never built a road or ran a grader, but seems everyone knows more about roads than the folks that deal with them for a living. :shock:
Dad tells me there was a guy near here that used to cut willows to feed his cattle when winters were tough. Apparently they can get by on 'em. He said they made a better turd than a snow ball would :wink:
 
How do you build a safe society for children, animals, the elderly, etc. without some sort of report system? And then, an agency to check the reports?

Aren't we all relieved we have a way to uncover true abuse cases?
And the baseless cases are free entertainment - if you aren't the unjustly accused. Guess that is when we have to be gracious and see the larger picture.

That horse and blanket story was hilarious.
 
Of course there has to be a system in place to catch true abusers but until it happens to you it's hard to undrestand the level of insult that you feel. There are plenty of local people-vets, brand inspectors etc who could of cleared this last case with a phone call-think of what the 400 mile round trip cost the SPCA. My friend took it well his Dad was in town trying to raise money to bail him out of jail. Silver of course we all know how to run a grader-gravel goes in the ditch-sod goes in the middle of the road.

I'm sure it must feel insulting. That said, the public gets enraged if they learn an abuse has been reported but it was inadequately investigated letting the abuse go on and on. So I don't think there is any way around it except to be forgiving and feel a little humiliated when the proper authority investigates.
 
What pees me off is somebody with a vindictive streak can really cause a producer, a parent or whatever alot of grief. I think that a copy of a written-signed-complaint should be available to all parties concerned. Might cut down on the knee jerk cell phone calls by some urban passer by. I know in minor hockey things run alot smoother if issues have to dealt with in writing.
 
The sad part about the whole thing, is that I know of 2 different operations that have been reported, where pretty much nothing came of it. One place had cows dead and dying all over the place, starved to death, the SPCA came out, removed some of the animals that were alive, and the next fall he was back buying cattle again. The other, the guy told the SPCA a story about how the feed was coming, but the trucks had been held up. Nothing came of either one. Doubt that the SPCA ever came bace to reassess either situation.

Yet you hear of stories like this one, where the SPCA is up there taking care of a situation that isn't a problem!!

Better be careful if you have pasture along a major highway. Yet if you live in the 'boonies' like us, they won't do anything, even if something is reported.

My niece lives on a major Hwy,same thing. SPCA came knocking at her door saying she was starving her horses because there was never any bales out.Course whoever reported it couldn't see the bale feeder ALWAYS full,plus grained everyday just over a hump in the hill.

I'll tell you nr,she was very very hurt and upset by being accused of mistreating the animals she dearly loves and looks after very well.
 
When V_Key was a baby her bedroom was in the front of the house.

(Hanks)Welding Shop across the street was painting a horse trailer (not in a paint booth) the whole area was in a paint cloud. V_Key room and the neighbor stank of paint fumes.

I called Air Quality Control; they wanted my Name – Address – and Phone number. I knew that Hank and his back door neighbor were always fighting, so I gave his "X" name, address, Phone number. I was there when the Inspector got here and wrote Hank up, and would not tell him who called it in, he then drove around the corner and knocked on X's door.

Hank and X fought over this for years…
 
Whatever happened to the days when folks solved things face to face? Instead of hiding behind an telephone, refusing to give information and accusing people of neglect or abuse, why not go visit the horrible person and find out if you know what the heck your talking about. Society has become a bunch of whiny know-it-all types who don't have the guts to do for themselves. If I was abusing animals and a neighbor came by to set me straight, i'd at the least have respect for the person for trying to find out the situation and doing something about it. Humans are a gutless bunch nowadays! We had a guy who let his dogs run and they killed a neighbors goat herd. He showed up at the dead goat farm and threw out a bunch of chainlink wire and said fence your place so my dogs can't get in! I'd stuck that wire somewhere and told him my stock didnt leave my yard and get killed on your place, fence in your dang dogs!(But if they'd come to my place they would be chasing goats in the happy hunting grounds). I think i've vented enough. It's still chicken poop in my book! :!:

:agree: Eventually, the way the majority of town/city people teach their kids to be happy and love everyone, we're going to end up with a generation of people that wets themselves when confronted by anything in life.
 
I had this happen a couple months ago I have/had a cow that was very thin.Everyone with any cows has a few of these.We trailed cows home and she stayed behind. There was hay and water but 6 day's later the sherriff came calling.Seem's the prick neighbor who had a cow in with mine that I fed for 2 months sorted out and hauled back for free just 5 day's earlier called me in.So the sheriff wanted to go check it out so off we go.Now I was torqued the neighbor wanted to come out on my pasture and inspect.I told the sheriff if he came out there I would be going to jail and the pot growing neighbor to the hospital.I pulled my rifle out and shot the cow dead to which I said "You F^@&(@$ happy now" I then called the neighbor and told him what I thought.

Town people are plain dumdasses in this regaurd.Nothing lives forever some live for days other's live for years.Have they ever seen a human being die from cancer.I had a good friend who died from it at age 33 he was 6-2 250#s when he died he weighed 90#s knowone gave up on him until the end.Thats what happen's with alot of these type of cows they are dieing but a guy always want's to give them a chance.Maybe we should just shoot them when they show a little rib.In that case I'd have to shoot all my heavy milking cows.

Old Dog you showed some real balls calling in your neighbor.Poor guy was just trying to make a living

I've got enough of my own problems that I don't need to worry about what others are doing.

Yes, nonrancher, that makes sense to a degree, but the issue, in my mind, is not feeling lucky to have some sort of reasonable oversight and then smile and shrug, suffering the humiliations that come along with it; for me the whole issue is how sometimes folks with underlying motives can easily cause grief without due cause, responsibility, or potential payment - which basically isn't balanced, only allows for escalation and misunderstanding. If we're going to talk checks and balances, if we're going to increase understanding, education and tolerance, then lets talk checks and balances, e.g. say both sides of things in the same breath so everyone understands the full scope of the conversation. That would seem fair and reasonable to me. Cheers.

Some times neighbors leave you no choice. I am not saying that you did this to your neighbor. I am talking about a old man who was a long time neighbor of ours. He had a small place the neighbored us in several places. The entire time I was growing up and until he sold his place his manner of cattle raising was a world apart from what I was raised with. He just let everything go, never branded, weaned or castrated, the only time he did anything with them was when he needed money. Then he would show up load a couple young ones up and sell them. By the time we had to turn him in for cruelty his heard was so inbred it was scary. This was a few years ago when the drought was really bad here, the old man never but any more money into things than he had to. By this point his wind mills had failed due to neglect and a couple to dropping water levels. It got to the point where his stock had no water and we were going over once a day opening a gate and watering close to a 100 head of his cattle on our water tank fed by a storage tank system on a well that was getting very iffy. This went on for months, we would talk with the old man and get told that everything was fine and we were just trying to take his place away from him. It got to the point were we finially called in the brand inspector and had him talk to the old man. All this did was make the old man mad so he hired a fellow to come in with a backhoe and open some water holes up in a dry creek bed. This worked until early fall when the holes all dried up. At this point he moved all his cattle back to his home place for the winter. Then the next thing we know in late spring early summer a trucker shows up and starts jumping cattle of all ages out the back of his truck into on of this guys pastures cause the old man hired him to haul them from the home place back to the pastures next to us but didnt give him a key to unlock the chain across the gate to the corrals and never showed up. The problem was that there was not a drop of water any where in these pastures and no effort was made to fix windmills or do anything to get them water. These cattle started dieing just about as soon as they were unloaded. We couldnt find the old man and neither could the brand inspector. When they went to the home place they found dead animals every where, and no feed or water. When the brand inspector found this he filed cruelty charges and seized the cattle. By the time the whole mess ended up in court the old man blamed my family for the whole thing claiming we stold all his water and feed, trying to put him out of business. Needless to say it got pretty ugly but sometimes people just dont leave you any other option but to go to the proper authorites
 
:roll: :shock: Most PETA folks that have horses and dogs spend more time and money on their animals than they do on their children.

nr, I can see both sides here, HOWEVER, there are too many instances of accusations of both animal cruelty and human abuses where it is a crank case and people have suffered.

The difficulties of families whose children have been taken from them due to absolutely false accusations and overzealous child protective services people has to be some of the most heartbreaking and absolute injustice imaginable.....certainly the equal in effective damage of the true abuse cases, IMO, as children are harmed in both cases.

We humans cannot perfect either society or individual people by our paltry human efforts and laws. Doing real harm and injustice in the name of 'helping' just doesn't cut it!
