I am only 16 and plan on going to collage to study animal science. My goal is to be a order buyer. But I really don't know who order buyers work for and how their paid, or how you enter the professtion. Do any of you know anything about order buying?

If you'd push your gramma off a cliff for a nickel you'd probably make a good order buyer lol. Order buyers work for themselves and usually charge a percentage commission on the cattle they handle. It can be a lucrative living but it is pretty high stress. The best way to learn it is to go to work for an established buyer and learn the ropes. alot of the guys up here worked for auction marts till they got some contacts and then went on their own.

I'll have you know that I once knew a reputable order buyer.

Poor guy died back in the mid 1970's though.

I don't who has the worse reputation. Order buyers or Timber buyers?

Noirthern Rancher gave you sound advice. Get a job at a auction or working for a buyer at an assembly yards to learn cattle and make connections. If you look around not many young order buyers unless they are working for their fathers. Most have to chase alot of cattle before they get to buy.Good to attend lots of auctions watch learn and listen. Where I live order buyers need to be bonded and have a license.
Good Luck

PS Are you running some cattle where you live and what breed?

Practice sitting for hours at a time, so you can develop "sale barn butt." Also practice the art of bidding so you can bid in an almost unnoticed fashion. Develop a subtle "sign" so that only you and the auctioneer know you are bidding. This could be a slight facial "twitch," possibly a "wink," or maybe just a very minor movement of one finger. Develop a "poker face" so that others cannot determine if your first bid will also be your last. Keep the competition guessing. It is all part of the game. Most of all have fun at your future occupation. If you are not having fun being an order buyer, maybe selling used cars would be a good way to make a living. It is a more physically demanding livelihood, because you have to periodically walk from the office out to the car lot to hobnob with a potential tire kicker. Good luck in whatever you choose to do. :-)
