FYI - Press Release

considering what people are willing to pay for a pound of buffalo vs. a pound of beef, yours seems to be a minority opinion, Soapweed.

All that matters to some people is what the current fad happens to be. Kind of like "fat pants" that droop--they are high dollar but darned ugly. Heck, what do I know? As far as I'm concerned good old cowboy cut Wranglers look way better than the trendy new 20x more expensive new age cowboy trousers. Shoot, I've always been a square peg that really doesn't care if it fits a round hole. For what it's worth, I was so uncool that I wore a hat and boots every day to school from Kindergarten all the way through high school and for my one year of college. Did people tease me? Yes. Did it bother me? No. :-)

Shoot, I'm back-sliding so bad that I bought one of those farmer hooks the other day. Today we penned five older calves to tag, in a rather large corral. One of us (I won't say who  ) had a lariat, and one of us was using the farmer hook. When the task was all accomplished, the score was: lariat 0, farmer hook 5. :-) Old age, and aches and pains makes a feller look for easier ways of doing things. :? :-)

If Buffalo is still so popular, why is the price in the dumps?

I don't like Buffalo or wild meat much. Little goes a long ways.
We are eating an Angus heifer that was fed grain and she is
delicious. Juicy, tender, everything we want in good beef.

Takes longer to cook poor meat so it's good, than to start with
the best in the first place. We don't put many condiments on our meat.
Just a little seasoning is all.

BEEF, IT'S WHAT'S FOR DINNER!!!

(sung in my best voice) Old, ol' Soapweed had a farm, e i e i o!

Man, it's hell to get old ain't it?

I used to use a cane when I was calvin' quite a few cows. Feller can reach out and get them around the neck and use it to defend yourself against them "good mama's". And they are awful handy when your as crippled up afoot as most of us are.

By the way, tell Peach Blossom she better get to practicin' her ropin' skills if she's gonn'a miss like that. Man, she'll have to work the ground all day long, come brandin' season! :o

Saaaay, ain't them hooks used by sheepherders? :???: :? :o

As a matter of fact, and with all due respect, Peach Blossom was not in on that little bit of action this afternoon.

Ohhhh, so it was just you and the Cosmo Kid? I seeeee. OK boss.

Well, you can't expect them young fellers to rope as well as us old hands who've had more practice.

Not around here tonight. It's lent!

I gave up giving up beef for Lent.

Well then your a dang poor Catholic!

Dad told a story about a neighbor couple who when they got married, the wife was Catholic and the husband was basicly a heathen.

After quite a few years of marriage, the wife finally talked the husband into joining the church.

This was back when Catholics weren't supposed to eat any meat but fish on any Friday.

Dad was in town one friday, not too long after this feller joined the Church, and saw him and one the guys frinends, eating at a cafe. They were both obviously, as Spike Van Cleave would say, "with drink taken".

Dad noticed that this brand new Catholic was eating a great big steak. Dad said to him, "So this is what you "good" Catholics eat on friday, huh?"

They feller looked up at dad and said, "Why you dirty S.O.B!"

Dad always got such a kick out of this story. The feller was a rounder and about a halfways crooked horse trader and cheat. Guess Dad finally thought he'd got one over on him.

I heard today on the radio where many of the Bishops were giving people a "get out of hell free card" today regarding eating meat since it was Saint Pattys day and many of the good Irish Catholics wanted corned beef......

Our bishop wouldn't do it.

I never did like him too much.

Back to grain vs. grass, I think it's high time grass fed beef get it's due. It could be the salvation of all of us producers if things go right and we live long enough.
As far as the taste goes, I allways figured you could throw that grain fattened crap to the dog's, if they would eat it. White tastless fat, who wants it? :???:
I'll just be happy to see a market develop that would take my beef from the pasture straight to the plate, seems as though it would sure cut out a lot of middlemen.

From what I've seen, read and experienced, your best bet is to just do it yourself, Silver.

And I do, JB, but I can't do it at enough volume to really make a big difference. Add to that the fact that our precious previous gov't has outlawed this trade, and it pretty well stops any grand plans right in their tracks.
Technically, we are not aloud to slaughter anything without a federally inspected kill, and federally or provincially inspected processing. So now I guess I'm just another seller of contraband (psssst, buddy, wanna buy a steak?)

Get 'em hooked and reel 'em in!

Can you imagine bootlegging like they used to do whiskey, only with truck and trailer or pickup and trailer?

I could paint it all orange, with a big ole rebel flag on it. 'Course, I'd hafta build a big ole ramp to get the truck AND trailer airborn across the creek.

Even though it's "healthiness" would probably cut the "middle" out of a lot of men  , I don't think it is an idea that will ever catch on big time. Nothing beats the taste of good old Nebraska Cornfed Beef.
