Left at 3:30 AM Friday morning blowing snow and passing snow plows and rotary plows, ground blizzards all the way up Snake River Canyon thru Antelope Flats
And over Togwotee pass. Then there were good roads on into Riverton but no motel room we had one 25 miles away in Lander for the night.
We went to the Ron Thon wrestling tournament, the finals are better then State as all school wrestle here not according to school size. There were over 600 wrestlers form over 32 Wyoming High Schools. Teams as small as 5 kids, 2 varsities 3 JV to School that took 2 big busses to bring their teams. The Varsity bracket also included 1st string JV. The JV tournament was at the middle school on 3 mats till the finals where the top six places wrestled at the High School on 5 mats. Rex won 1st on the JV bracket we have 2 seniors in his weight on Varsity and 3 more under classmen in that weight.. Rex won by pin, decision, decision, and decision and pin his opponent in the 3rd period of his championship match. The JV took a 3rd place team trophy home.
The varsity had 4 wrestlers up for 1st. One wrestled a kid from Gillette that had wrestled in Beijing and has a 3 year record of 101-1 and is ranked 6th in the world. Lot of kids paired up with wins in the 30s to 40s and just a couple losses. Our 215 wrestler one 1st and the Team took 2nd losing by 1 1/2 points to Gillette.
We checked Rex out of the bus trip home and took him to the Bull for a steak dinner. When we were leaving the Team was just leaving McD next door. Rex got a texted from a friend that the science club had just won the State science Bowl and were going to Nationals. We fueled up and caught up with the busses at Dubois. One of the coaches was holding another coaches wife and I heard him say the busses are stay here will you take one of the wrestler back When the ambulance come down. He told me a little bit about what had got over the bus radio.
Our 130 lb varsity wrestler parents had been in an accident. His Dad had wrestled in college and met and married an American Indian, they had raised a family and the opps came this last son after most their children had left home. He managed the Cheese factory in Thayne Wyoming for years and has managed the restaurant in front since the cheese factory close a couple years ago.
We made 40 miles up Togwotte pass and were held up for 2 hours when we was allowed to go by a semi and mad a corner at the bottom of the hill and road up the hill a ¼ mile ageist the 8-9 foot high snow bank on the wrong side of the road the car had came around the corner and here was the semi coming toward them and too late to even try to turn. The wrestler's mother died but wasn't let out till they taken her the 100 miles back to Lander. Last report was his Dad had been flown out of Lander to SLC he had been pinned in the car for a few hours. There was one of his older brothers in the back seat we understand wasn't hurt. Sure was a long ride on home.
