Gantlet of Emotion.

Left at 3:30 AM Friday morning blowing snow and passing snow plows and rotary plows, ground blizzards all the way up Snake River Canyon thru Antelope Flats
And over Togwotee pass. Then there were good roads on into Riverton but no motel room we had one 25 miles away in Lander for the night.
We went to the Ron Thon wrestling tournament, the finals are better then State as all school wrestle here not according to school size. There were over 600 wrestlers form over 32 Wyoming High Schools. Teams as small as 5 kids, 2 varsities 3 JV to School that took 2 big busses to bring their teams. The Varsity bracket also included 1st string JV. The JV tournament was at the middle school on 3 mats till the finals where the top six places wrestled at the High School on 5 mats. Rex won 1st on the JV bracket we have 2 seniors in his weight on Varsity and 3 more under classmen in that weight.. Rex won by pin, decision, decision, and decision and pin his opponent in the 3rd period of his championship match. The JV took a 3rd place team trophy home.
The varsity had 4 wrestlers up for 1st. One wrestled a kid from Gillette that had wrestled in Beijing and has a 3 year record of 101-1 and is ranked 6th in the world. Lot of kids paired up with wins in the 30s to 40s and just a couple losses. Our 215 wrestler one 1st and the Team took 2nd losing by 1 1/2 points to Gillette.
We checked Rex out of the bus trip home and took him to the Bull for a steak dinner. When we were leaving the Team was just leaving McD next door. Rex got a texted from a friend that the science club had just won the State science Bowl and were going to Nationals. We fueled up and caught up with the busses at Dubois. One of the coaches was holding another coaches wife and I heard him say the busses are stay here will you take one of the wrestler back When the ambulance come down. He told me a little bit about what had got over the bus radio.
Our 130 lb varsity wrestler parents had been in an accident. His Dad had wrestled in college and met and married an American Indian, they had raised a family and the opps came this last son after most their children had left home. He managed the Cheese factory in Thayne Wyoming for years and has managed the restaurant in front since the cheese factory close a couple years ago.
We made 40 miles up Togwotte pass and were held up for 2 hours when we was allowed to go by a semi and mad a corner at the bottom of the hill and road up the hill a ¼ mile ageist the 8-9 foot high snow bank on the wrong side of the road the car had came around the corner and here was the semi coming toward them and too late to even try to turn. The wrestler's mother died but wasn't let out till they taken her the 100 miles back to Lander. Last report was his Dad had been flown out of Lander to SLC he had been pinned in the car for a few hours. There was one of his older brothers in the back seat we understand wasn't hurt. Sure was a long ride on home.

Its too bad the wins were overshadowed by the accident :( In the type of country we live in the inclement weather and parents and children making so many miles on the road to many differnt activities sad things like this can happen.... So Sorry :(

By Sarah Hale on Feb 4, 2008 in Featured

A traffic accident 29 miles west of Dubois has claimed the life of Thayne area woman.

According to the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Barbara Dana, age 55, was killed when a semi truck struck the 1999 Ford Conture she was a passenger in on Saturday, Feb. 2.

The patrol reported the east bound semi lost control and entered into the west bound lane on U.S. 26 in the Togowatee Pass area and struck the Dana vehicle. The truck was driven by James Pfenninger, age 50 of Dubois, Idaho. The Ford Conture was driven by Frank Dana, age 59. Also listed as a passenger was Scott Dana, age 29. Both Frank and Scott were transported by helicopter to the Lander Hospital. The traffic accident occurred at 6:41 p.m.

The Danas were returning home following the Ron Thon Wrestling Tournament in Riverton, where Star Valley had competed.

Funeral service information for Barbara Dana will be posted when it becomes available.

I don't feel it wrong to post this e-mail I recieved

Dear Wrestling Family,

We are sending this to let those of you who may not have heard or are wanting an update about the tragedy that has struck a member of our wrestling family. After visiting with the family they wanted me to pass along the following information.

Frank, Barbara, & Scott Dana were involved in a head on crash with a Semi on the way over Togwatee Pass on Saturday night. Barbara didn't survive the crash. Frank and Scott were transported to Lander Hospital. They were then flown to University Hospital in Salt Lake about 2:00 a.m. . I took Dakota to Lander to meet up with his family. He then went with them to Salt Lake.

As of 6:00 p.m. this is their status. Frank is in Critical but stable condition. He is having trouble maintaining his Blood Pressure. For this reason they are keeping him heavily sedated and monitoring him closely in the ICU. Scott has had his spleen removed and is in critical condition as well. His condition was much improved. Neither of these men are out of the woods yet.

Dakota will stay with his family down in Salt Lake for a period of
time. They would like to Thank everyone for all you have done.
Your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated and welcome.

We are going to have our normal morning practice with some time to sit down as a team to visit, pray, and what ever else we feel is important at this time. (7:00 am) Counselors will be made available and the coaches and administration will be there for anyone who needs to talk. We are going to move forward with the weeks plans for all of our duals & tourneys. At the current time we are planning to leave for Evanston on Tuesday @ 2:00 pm . We will take everyone who will be able to wrestle. Those who aren't going to get a match will stay home for a practice.

Wednesday & Thursday are home duals. Friday & Sat. the JV will be at a tourney. (Those not going to Regionals)

We will keep you posted on the emails as we get updated.

It is times like these that we are lucky to have such a great wrestling family like you all. Thanks for all you do.

Eddie & Family

Hang in there, how is Rex doing?

Rex was our rock when his brother got killed this summer. He had tears but I wail.
A kid his age committed suicide this winter Rex was away at a tournament and things from last summer and being away from home really got to him . We feel he finally had his release of emotions.
Sunday he stayed home from Church, he really has a soft heart. He will not challenge one of the seniors for one of the top two spot for a change to go to regional and State, because this is their last chance and he said he has next year. Coaches moved him up for a dual toning in Evanston.

Frank Died yesterday Feb 5 in the morning. Scott is still in ICU the Doctors found some more internal bleeding and infection.
Last night at the dual at Evanston Dakota made it but didn't wrestle. After the pelage of Allegiance all the wrestlers from both team kneeled in a big circle a short tribute was read and a moment of silence was observed.
I imagine the same thing at tonight's home dual.
