After we trailed the cows home this morning, and fed some hay, we had to go back and pick up some sore-footed cows with the horse trailer. Peach Blossom and I were assigned to this detail.

There were five head that in military language would be considered "sick, lame, and lazy" and needed a ride home in the paddy wagon.

They need to make a hard left. Peach's hand is barely visible in the upper right corner of the picture, pointing the way to go for the cows.

They are headed correctly.

Now I'd better put the camera back in my pocket so I can tend to business.

We got them in just fine. :-)

I don't much blame them, I think I would get into the trailer for a ride instead of walking in the snow lol.

Looked like a very nice day for a ride on horse back.

Glad to see that it went so easy, how do you train your cows to go where you just point your finger??

Peach says that the cows are confused, and if she points the right direction, they will pay attention and go that way. It is the power of suggestion.

I say it is wishful thinking, but when she is happy, I am happy. :-)

They are Bogs boots. One kind must be a copycat kind of the other. She likes them because they are lightweight, warm, and she can go pretty deep into either bogs or muck.

did she use that theory to get them to go to the right of the trailer (into the "alley") also?

my luck, they would have ducked off to the left & down the road............ :x

That is why I put the camera back in my pocket, as my job was to turn them. The secret is to go slow and easy, don't say a word, don't holler, don't ki-yi-yippee yippy yay, let the cows think it is their idea, and leave all dogs at home. :-) One thing that almost kiboshed the deal was when Peach Blossom's cell phone started ringing just as we got between the trailer and the fence. All is well that ends well, and we got them hauled home to their own little space where a bale is in a bale ring and a warm waterer is right nearby.

The rest of the secret is to be mounted. I notice Peach was letting you ride Goose!

...are yall implying that Soap's mule couldn't get-r-done...........

You are right, also. :-) I heard Trent Loos's "Loos Tales" radio program a couple days ago. He was trying to garner interest in mule polo. That sounds like it would be fun.

Sarah and I were loading a bull that way one time. He jumped the fence in front of the panels, so we got him back, and Sarah stayed on the other side of the fence as I brought him up again. Sure enough, he would have jumped in the same place, but she was there right on time to turn him, and Doc & I were blocking the way at the front of the Pickup, so he just jumped over the hood. He cleared all but the last 2 feet where his but left a crater in the hood :???: :???: About a ton Limosine bull. We ended up driving him to the corral with some others to get him, then hauled him off to the sale. The ol' truck sits in the boneyard with her battle scars.

...not quite the same situation, but a few years back I was in a ranch horse competion in an indoor coliseum. During the fence work segment, I got alot too far off the cow & when I went to turn him, he had enuff room to take a couple hard strides & jumped the rail into the front rows  ........luckily nobody was sittin there

OUR luck and they would have attempted to jump the panels OR turn around and run over us

The guys here have pretty good luck doing this. Re-read what Soapweed said about letting the cattle take their time, find their way, and not pressuring them much, if at all. Takes training over time.......of cattle AND cowboys new to the ranch. Moving cattle is neither the time nor place to show what a 'go-getter' of a supercowboy one is!!!!!
