Georgia 3rd graders must be scary

Should these children be charged as criminals like a 13 year old could be?

Cops: 3rd-graders aimed to hurt teacher By RUSS BYNUM, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 12 minutes ago

A group of third-graders plotted to attack their teacher, bringing a broken steak knife, handcuffs, duct tape and other items for the job and assigning children tasks including covering the windows and cleaning up afterward, police said Tuesday.

The plot by as many as nine boys and girls at Center Elementary School in south Georgia was a serious threat, Waycross Police Chief Tony Tanner said.

"We did not hear anybody say they intended to kill her, but could they have accidentally killed her? Absolutely," Tanner said. "We feel like if they weren't interrupted, there would have been an attempt. Would they have been successful? We don't know."

The children, ages 8 and 9, were apparently mad at the teacher because she had scolded one of them for standing on a chair, Tanner said. A prosecutor said they are too young to be charged with a crime under Georgia law.

School officials alerted police Friday after a pupil tipped off a teacher that a girl had brought a weapon to school, Tanner said.

Police seized a broken steak knife, handcuffs, duct tape, electrical and transparent tape, ribbons and a crystal paperweight from the students, who apparently intended to use them against the teacher, Tanner said.

Nine children have been given discipline up to and including long-term suspension, said Theresa Martin, spokeswoman for the Ware County school system. She would not be more specific but said none of the children had been back to school since the case came to light.

The purported target is a veteran educator who teaches third-grade students with learning disabilities including attention deficit disorder, delayed development and hyperactivity, friends and parents said.

The scheme involved a division of roles, Tanner said. One child's job was to cover windows so no one could see outside, he said. Another was supposed to clean up after the attack.

"We're not sure at this point in the investigation how many of the students actually knew the intent was to hurt the teacher," Tanner said.

The parents of the students have cooperated with investigators, who aren't allowed to question the children without their parents' or guardians' consent, he said. Authorities have withheld the children's names.

Police expected to forward the results of their investigation to prosecutors, Tanner said.

Children in Georgia can't be charged with a crime unless they are at least 13, District Attorney Rick Currie said.

Martin told The Florida Times-Union of Jacksonville, Fla., that administrators would follow school system policy and state law in disciplining the students.

"From what I understand, they were considered pretty good kids," Martin said. "But we have to take this seriously, whether they were serious or not about carrying this through, and that's what we did."

Four mothers of other third-grade students at Center Elementary called for the immediate expulsion of the suspected plotters.

Stacy Carter and Deana Hiott both cited school system policy stating that any student who brings "anything reasonably considered to be a weapon" is to be expelled for at least the remainder of the school year.

"We don't want our children around them," Carter told the Times-Union. "The one with the knife could have stabbed my child or someone else's child at lunch or out on the playground."

"This is an isolated incident, an aberration. ... We have good kids," Center Principal Angie Coleman told the newspaper.

They can be charged....but only a a juvenile...not under adult charges.

I only heard part of the story this AM on the way out the door to the pastures but I think these kids were ' learning impaired' to some degree.

Still...I say throw the book at'em.

I taught school for a few years....NEVER AGAIN!!!!

I was thinking back to some of my old ( the same one my parents had also!!) HS teachers. Lordy, them ol' gals would be in San Quentin now if they were still teaching these days!!

Kola was a teacher.........this country is doomed once those kids get into the power structure!

but I agree, lock the little turds up!

Heres my take on this situation. Its become common to medicate special needs children, well any child that shows a hint of activity{lots of medicated boys out there :? }If we keep allowing that what is our future going to look like,we're changing there brain chemicals.
I recently read in the Globe and Mail...that children as young as 4 are being diagnosed with Bi-polar disorder....and being treated medically for it   There brains aren't fully developed, where in the hell do they come up with this stuff. It just angers and upsets me we play with medications and brain patterns in young people.
I will fight to the death if any teacher suggests my active NORMAL grandson needs to be put on ritalan :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

I have a nephew that had over half the class on Ritalin. Teacher had it easy. Just drug them up to keep them quiet.

99.9% of kids need what we all got as kids....our ' azz' busted when we went against the ' laws' of the land!! And to learn the defn of the word NO!

I am glad to report that my ' boys' here in the valley, whom have all grown up now to their late 20's early 30's and fine young men to boot , will not hesitate to jerk up their kids and tear'em up when needed.

Of course, these are farm kids and have way more maturity to them than ' city' kids as they have been exposed to work and responsibilty from the time they first opened their eyes....but kids being kids..things get sideways at times.

Kola, I think I need you to give me some lernin .... can I stay after school???

Ps. Nonothing, sorry for the brown nosing to Mrs Greg and Kolan. But I found it interesting that I agree with both their opinions.

Paregoric

Paregoric, or camphorated tincture of opium, is a medication known for its antidiarrheal, antitussive, and analgesic properties. It was a household remedy in the 18th and 19th centuries, when it was widely used to calm fretful children. In the 20th century its use declined as governments regulated it. (In the United States, paregoric can still be found in the pharmacopeia, but it is a Schedule III drug under the Controlled Substances Act.)

The principal active ingredient is morphine (0.4 mg/mL). Other ingredients are benzoic acid, camphor and anise oil. The main effect of this preparation is to increase the muscular tone of the intestine, and also to inhibit normal peristalsis. Its main medicinal use is to control fulminant diarrhea. It is also an antitussive (cough suppressant). Problems with its use include opiate dependency and analgesia which can mask symptoms of diseases that need treatment.

Paregoric is sometimes confused with laudanum, because their chemical names are similar: camphorated tincture of opium (paregoric) vs. tincture of opium (laudanum). However, laudanum contains 10 milligrams of morphine per milliliter, 25 times more than paregoric. Confusion between the two drugs has led to overdose and deaths in several patients. Thus the term "paregoric" should be used instead of "camphorated opium tincture," since the latter may be confused with laudanum.

Paregoric was also used to calm Mormon babies in church[citation needed], and for teething discomfort until it was upgraded to a Class III Narcotic and banned for sale "over the counter". It was also used to calm babies in orphanages in Honduras in the 1980s because it was cheaper and easier than feeding them throughout the night.
