Like to give a little overview of how things get done here, and where here is. Some things would be better in their own threads. Also bear in mind that I'm just describing ranching here; I worked on some very professional beef outfits in North America and in England, there's improvements to be made here, but we face some unique challenges too.

OK...Israel is on the Eastern shore of the Mediterranean, a land bridge between Asia, Africa and Europe. The Golan Heights is a volcanic plateau in the north east, formed when Africa and Asia smashed into each other. So the soils are a little young and the range rocky. For more on the area; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golan_Heights .

WE have year round grass, depending on summer fires, so we don't put up any forage; and year round riding (except during heavy mist!!). Cows are supplemented with chicken litter in summer/ early fall, sometimes "silaged" with fruit peels or substandard fruit.
Most places have a summer calving "Alef" around June, and a winter calving "Bet" end of February. Cows not pregnant for one season get moved for another chance. I don't like it either. Means bulls in and out of herds and a lot of extra moving animals around. Furthermore, beef is produced under Kosher laws, so calves are not castrated.......there's many out of season births!
Typically Israeli cowboys (Bokerim) ride everyday to check on livestock, predation, theft prevention, pasture and fence m'ment. We have a lot of tick bourne diseases, mostly malarial in nature, plus Babesiosis. We spray lots.
Most try to keep mixed commercial cows with some brahma or balady blood lines bred to European or British bulls. "Simbrah" seems pretty popular. Horns a left on to keep me fit and as a vague attempt to get the cow to defend her calf from thieves and wolves. No one is prepared to tell me that only the polled girls get their babies robbed!
Thankyou for reading folks.
I'd like to start separate threads on predator control and thievery....and I know bugger all about Kosher laws being neither Jewish nor religious, I'll answer any other questions you might have though!!!

so Toad.....a question......you grew up in England.....lived in Canada.....how in the world did you end up in Isreal?

We seem to have very similar problems but also different ones for each region.
Too true BMR.
Yanuck...thats kind of a long story, I guess many out west have ancestors who left the comforts of the eastern cities to build their own lives. Maybe theres a little of that in all of us. I came here in early '96 after university and Ag college and stayed until mid 2001 when my girlfriend (now wife) wanted to go back to her home in Canada. Great country, but I missed the adventure of being here.
Thanks for your time folks, I'm still struggling a little to get pics up.
BC I sent you a PM, your cell doesn't appear to be connected!

so does your wife like it there? and I guess my next question is how safe is it to live there? and I don't mean danger from the 4 legged variety?!

there are instructions on how to post pictures in the Photo Contest forum :D

Instructions? I guess thats like an operators manual that we only open after its all gone haywire!!!!!!!!
Safe is relative I guess as fanatics are everywhere. You just stay alert in a different way, I'm never too far from firearms and whatnot. Theres a ton of minefields around that the occasional heifer will get into, have to be pretty careful roping them and dragging them out, and walking around in minefields is a little stressful. I'm a volunteer in the Border Patrol police unit so I do a couple of night shifts a month so my friends and family can sleep.
Most problems are far from where I am, but we do get the odd katyusha rocket. I go with the "Born to be hung" philosophy 'cos nothing's killed me yet.
The wife loves it. Life is suprisingly normal all over the world!

:D

That is very interesting. Please keep telling more about your life over there. And your puppy pictures were too cute!

No bomb-proof horses..sorry. I used to enjoy riding this mare but she's due to foal anyday now. (I know that knee looks funny but its just the picture!)

I know one guy who had his horse blown out from under him; I know of another who wasn't as lucky. I've shot M16 and AK47 from some horses here if you're referring to bomb proof as a training standard of quietness. Most of our range land is firing range so the animals get used to random loud noises. We loose the occasional cow near a target, but thats the 'tax' for grazing. You know what really freaks the horses is the flapping of the flags on UN vehicles as they pass. (Not directed at any specific board member!!!BC!)
Thankyou for your interest.

Thank you for the interesting post, Toad, you seem to be in the same situation both climatically and security wise as we were back home in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, we are now in the UK via the USA but find the life here an anticlimax after the fun of living in Africa and the 'States!

Spent some time with Toad on the ranch - there are several large operations in that part of the world.

Thai help? LOL - looked like a bunch of cowboys to me - all European extract.

Toad - have your request on order and will be bringing them back with me.
