WASHINGTON -- Strong prices, driven by expanding ethanol production in the U.S., will drive corn plantings higher than even the government predicted in February, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Friday in its Prospective Plantings report.

Farmers are forecast to plant 90.5 million acres of corn this year, a 15% increase from last year. The USDA generated excitement in February when it predicted farmers would plant 87 million acres of corn, up from the 78.3 million that were planted in 2006.

Yep OT, I got hit in about every angle I can think of today. Even the cattle board going up was a negative for my hedged contracts, corn going down for my unsold bushels wasn't good, and the corn we bought to feed was bought at the wrong time. All in all I think I will have another drink of coffee!!!

Sorry about that hit, feeder.

This is the market responding to prices. We can produce more if we get more money for what we produce. This example shows this.

I just hope that not a lot more feeders/producers get caught in the same thing that you did, feeder. Unfortunately, I think there are a lot others that need another cup of coffee.

One thing I did forget to post was even after a day like today I have so much to be thankful for. The list is too long to write!!!

Good for you, feeder, to accentuate the positive and not dwell on the negative. Every day a person lives is a gift to be enjoyed, and you do a good job doing that. :-)

I had planned on planting a 120 acres of corn but a month ago turned in my seed in favor of planting some field peas and oats.Figured the corn farmers would'nt let me down will be buying screenings for $55 a ton by fall delivered.(I hope)

Feeder, how is your moisture situation out there? Farmers are starting to worry already about getting into the fields with how wet it is.. Was going to put Barley and Berseem in in 10 days but I don't think the forcast is smiling on me.. Of course, neither is my seed delivery guy

This bottom ground is going to take a long time to dry out if it doesn't warm up soon.. Of course, the farmers are always grumbling this time of year, I think they are just real eager to get out there and get the job done of planting for the year.. I always love it when those cold mud/dirt fields start turning green with the corn plants coming up.. Makes the area much more cheery, lol.

  Feeder- I know the feeling- about the day I agree to sell my calves you can almost guarantee the next day the price will jump a quarter....But I guess as long as the bank ain't got the place yet- I should be content...

IL Rancher, I don't believe we are as wet as you. It seems that eastern Iowa, Illinois, Indiana got more rain than us. It is raining here right now. I don't think we will get in the fields for 3 weeks. The grass is green and the mud is mud!! It's hard to comprehend that we will be praying for rain in July when I've had enough of rain now. I wished we could bottle this extra moisture and send it to Lazy Ace and TTB.

Pretty good market today. Sold 550 pound bulls off the fall cows for $1.35 a pound. Heifers brought $1.20 we finally timed it rite for once.

Well feeder, more rain here right now.. Looks like Eastern Iowa is getting HAMMERD right now with all the storms.. Saying we are suppossed to getr hit tonight.. Some Tornado warnings around the cities and we are under a Tornado watch until midnight or something like that..

Was talking to a neighbor for a while today, hog guy, and he is worrying about all this rain right now.. Says we are using it all up and one extreme tends to follow another... Shoot, how about a nice normal summer with decent moisture, not to hot, and rain when ya need it eh? I know by the end of July I will be praying for rain every night, always do those last two weeks of July and first two weeks of August... Awful hot and dry usually that time of year.

I guess we had bad weather earlier. We got a call that 1 1/2 confinement buildings went down 8 miles from us. We started calling around for places for the cattle to go. They did find a place for them. We haven't went to check it out because we have 2 grandkids here this evening. Tommorrow we will take a look. The buildings are right next to the highway so no one will know we are the oh,oh squad!!

We just finished up our third week of cloudy, wet, weather. Ended up with a near inch of rain today. The fields are soggy and there is water standing in places. The grass in greening but the forecast calls for more rain and some cooler temps (30's at night) so that will slow growth. The big crop farmers are getting nervous...they usually like to roll around the 10th of April. As it looks today, it will be a couple weeks before they can even think of pulling all that high priced metal out of the shed. Calving pastures are basically mud rinks....not so much a pasture. Calves seem to holding up pretty well, but ours are mostly Feb. calves.

We've had three inches of blessed rain in the last two or three days.. Corrals are impossible and we are going to start turning cattle into pastures till it dries up... Calves are doing well so far. I thought the cows seemed alittle better attitude wise this year. Don't ask me why, but I'm greatful for it.... The draws are full of water so are keeping cattle on the hill sides... Four wheel drive is the only travel and they are talking like more rain tomorrow....... YipppppPeeeeeee
