Good start to year for live cattle exports
Australian live cattle exports began 2006 on a strong note, with shipments during January totalling 55,391 head – a 17% increase on January 2005 levels. Exports increased to Israel, Malaysia and China, while shipments to Indonesia – Australia largest market – eased slightly.
Exports to Indonesia totalled 27,117 during January – 7% below the 29,084 head exported in January 2005. Reports suggest that Indonesian feedlots are running cattle supplies down in anticipation of cheaper cattle prices, as numbers increase with the approaching dry season. Exports to Malaysia totalled 5,455 head for the month, valued at A$820,000, with January's result the highest monthly shipment to Malaysia for the past six months.
Shipments to Israel totalled 17,641 head during January – 69% higher than January 2005 levels and the highest monthly total to that market on record. Israel has been a sporadic market for Australian live cattle exports in recent years, with shipments peaking in 2002 at 47,777 head.
Fremantle was the busiest port for live cattle departures during January, with 33,949 head exported to Indonesia, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates – the largest monthly exports from Fremantle for five years. At Geraldton, 8,805 head were loaded for Malaysia and Indonesia, while 8,302 head departed from Darwin destined for Indonesia. January also saw 2,835 head exported from Portland to Mexico and 1,500 head sent to Japan from Brisbane.
