GOOD SUNDAY MORNIN'

In the early 1970's, I was taking a loaded 18 wheeler from Kenai to Anchorage. It must have been around midnight; the night was cold, Summit Lake frozen, and a full moon lit up the snow covered mountains. I could see, silhouetted, 4 or 5 wolves playing like pups on the frozen lake. I shut down my rig, and could hear the howling of unseen animals in the timber on the far side of the lake. It was a beautiful sight, one I can see vividly in my minds eye some 30+ years later. I doubt that Ranchy, down in New Mexico thinks of wolves in such a romantic way. After the experience of them killing and devouring a horse that was precious to them I suspect that he sees wolves for the killers that they truly are. These animals are ruthless, savage animals that live only to kill and destroy. Still that scene on the Kenai Peninsula was beautiful. Sin may appear to be very inviting and appealing, but sin destroys. Eve saw the fruit looked very good, and was told it would make her wise, and like God. We all want to be more like God don't we? Sin kills in that it separates us from God. We can not be like God by disobeying Him. Sin is wrong, no matter how you slice it. Sin wrecks homes, and destroys lives. It may look pretty, but it ain't! God's rules are not designed to keep us from having fun, rather to enable us to be all He created us to be—to live up to our full potential. Have yourselves a good Sunday morning, and a good rest of the week.

Very good analogy, Shortgrass. The devil's magazine advertisements promoting liquor and cigarettes show only beautiful people enjoying the "sophistication" and "sex appeal" of drinking and smoking. They never show a homeless derelict drunk sitting dejected on the curb of a street, or a life-long smoker lying in a hospital bed in the last stages of lung cancer. Satan doesn't work in mysterious ways; he gets a lot accomplished in his mission to destroy the world because he has so many willing followers and helpers.

You guys are up early! Or is this the middle of the night heifer check?

I logged on hoping you'd have a word or two I could mull over on my long drive to Pierre today. Tomorrow is the last day of our legislative session and I needed what you offered this morning as an attitude adjustment before I venture forth to do the people's business.

Thanks shortgrass and soapweed. I appreciate your thoughts.

Shortgrass, you have just proven yourself to be a man of Faith. It would take a generous amount of faith to shut off the engine of a perfectly good truck, on a bitter cold Alaskan night, miles from nowhere, just to be still and listen to the howl of wolves. Alaska is a big beautiful state, but it is also cold, relentless and unforgiving. What if your truck wouldn't start again? It could be a very long wait until someone came by to rescue you. :-)

Peach Blossom, the Kosmo Kid, and I visited Alaska in August of 2005. It is a wonderful awesomely beautiful place to see. We went on an overnight fly-in fishing trip to Lake Chalutna, which is about seven miles long and a mile wide. It is surrounded by mountains, and the scenic grandeur is immense. As far as we could tell, the three of us and our guide were the only people on the lake. The stillness and peaceful tranquility was overwhelming. This was also an experience that will always be imbedded in my mind.

The Alaskan mountains make the Colorado Rockies look small by comparison. They just go up and up and up. It was sunny and clear while we were there (which we understand is somewhat rare) and the views were magnificent. Another factor that holds Alaska dear to my heart, is that there is no state sales tax. What an uninhibited free feeling it is to purchase something in a trading post and pay only the amount marked on the item. Alaska is a great state, but alas, the winters are too long and the winter days too dark for too long. Reckon I'll stay where I am. :-)

I thought I could hear the wolves, so that was when I shut the rig off. It started again within a few minutes, besides I knew other trucks were coming behind me. Alaska is a land of unique experiences, but it is a place for young men. I have flown in to Chalutna. After you fish in Alaska, did it ruin fishing for bluegill in the sandhills? I'll bet it did. After I returned to Colorado from there, I lost interest in fishing. The mountains there start at sealevel instead of 5,000 feet. Many of the tops of those mountains arn't actuall as high as we live, but they are impressive. Mt McKinley goes from sealevel to 20,320 feet. Quite a hill.

Thanks Shortgrass for the Sunday Morning inspirationals.............good luck
PS.....I hope to see Alaska someday, might even do a lil fishin

Thanks for the reminder of the power of the evil one. I struggle with that daily and am needing to be refreshed with the life that is truely free. I am thankful for your ability to share the gospel of Jesus Christ on this page.
