We recently traded vehicles. We went from a '98 ride to an '08 ride. What a difference. I really notice it on our gravel roads. We travel at least 4 miles of dirt to go anywhere. If we go east, it is 25 miles to pavement. The rougher the road, the more I appreciate my new ride. At the Bar C Slash, it has been a bumpy ride this year. Downright rough in fact! I sure do appreciate the One who carries us. We always pray for smooth roads in life, but the truth remains, the rougher the road, the more you appreciate the ride. Sailors aren't made in the bathtub! I don't always appreciate the road, but I always appreciate the ride. Thanks be to God, from whom all blessings flow. Have a good Sunday mornin', and a good rest of the week too.

Shortgrass, you're way ahead of me! Here in 2008 I feel somewhat behind the times. Especially this summer when I drove my '78 ride to OH.

I can't say I saw anyone else anywhere driving a '78 Impala. My cousin told me Ohio and other states put so much salt on the roads you just don't see older cars, period. I saw many cars 20 yrs newer than mine with serious rust problems.

My sister offered to loan me her late model Honda Civic for the trip. Although I could have saved quite a bit on my gas bill I graciously declined her offer. I'm much more comfortable driving my trusty old car and if the worst should happen I'm not out much and could buy a bus ticket home. The only special preparation I made was change oil and get a new pair of tires put on before the trip. Stuff I was gonna hafta do anyway.

The only older vehicle than mine I remember encountering on the interstates was an old VW bus. It must have had an overheating problem because all the hoods and shielding around the engine were open or removed. I think they might have got it up to 55 mph on downhill runs. :P

God doesn't promise us an easy ride through life on straight smooth roads. He does promise to ride along to help navigate the curves life throws at us, and gets us over the rough and bumpy stretches. Most importantly, He will keep us out of the ditch if we trust Him.

Congrats on your new ride. Now with the lower gas prices you have no excuse not to take the Mrs out for a Sunday drive!

If you saw the wind and snow blowin' outside the window this Sunday, you might think that was an excuse to not go joy riding!! At least I do. We will get down to Church and back if it gets no worse, but then We'll be content to stay by the fire. I'll bet that your 78 is certainly one of the older cars being used for road trips even in ranch circles. Ranchers do have a tendency to use one up before ya trade, also to be able to pay for what yer drivin'. An old truck driver in a 68 Mack (but this was years ago) told me the is no difference between an old truck and a new one if ya take care of it. Getting parts slows down the taking care of things. And yes, God doesn't promise an easy ride, just dependable transportation. He is dependable, is He not. Thanks for the post.

Thanks, Shortgrass. It is a cold windy day here this morning, too, but there is no snow in the air as of yet. God doesn't promise us a smooth ride or ideal weather all the time. He does promise to be with us to make life easier, and that is all that matters. :-)

Thanks Shortgrass, loved both this week and last weeks posts. You ALWAYS impact my week.

Hugs to you and Jan...hope shes doing well....Mairi

Thanks for the timely reminder Shortgrass. God gave us a bumpy road today as 5 inches of wet, sloppy snow fell making for a lot of extra winter work that required some hustling to get done before church this morning. The cornstalk grazing cows were unhappy so they needed hay, the feeder cattle were wet and discontented, so quickly bedded them by blowing corn stalk bales in the barns and we won't even talk about my disposition. Tonight when I stumbled in all wet and sopped, I had to stop and try to remember if we had experienced any summer at all....seems like we just got finished with all this disagreeable weather. Maybe tomorrow will be better........
