An email worth passing on--Why Go To Church?

A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. 'I've gone for 30 years now,' he wrote, 'and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them. So, I think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all.'

This started a real controversy in the 'Letters to the Editor' column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote this clincher:

'I've been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this.. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today. Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!' When you are DOWN to nothing.... God is UP to something! Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible! Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!' Have a Good Sunday mornin', and a great rest of the week too.

Thanks Shortgrass, keep the messages coming. May you be blessed as you have blessed so many with your words!!

Thanks for the reminder, Shortgrass! We have a good old fashioned blizzard going on in SD today so we rural folks are wimping out and not going to church today.

It's -9 with a lot of wind and blowing snow. I fed about 3 days worth of bales to the cattle yesterday so they can hunker down out of the wind until this is over. There isn't as much icing on power lines and the wind is not as strong as the storm last month. Hopefully we keep our electrictiy on!

These are the scriptures we would read at church today for the 3rd Sunday of Advent. Isaiah 61:1-2a,10-11 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 and John 1:6-8,19-28.

I hope everyone stays safe and warm today. Here it's just a good day to stay put if you don't have to go anywhere!

We have a blizzard blowing here this am, so we are missing church too. The key word is "missing". Do you miss church when you are unable to attend? The week always seems long when, for some reason, we don't go. The wind chill on TV - in town - was -2, but our station says -29. I'll bet there are lots of readings colder than that. We are 3 degrees right now with wind 15 to 20, and snow.

Thanks, Shortgrass. Wish the weather was nice enough that we could go to church today, but like John SD, we are also experiencing a wild winter snowy Arctic blast. Yesterday the temperature was up in the 40's and it allowed us to get cattle situated in protected areas before this deal came along. Now, at 9:45 this morning, the termperature stands at a sweltering twelve below zero and the winds are whipping at 30-40 m.p.h. It is a good day for home Bible study, fellowship with my wife and daughter, and playing Cribbage, Scrabble and Chess. :-)

It's nice to know that God is always with us whether the temperature is 120 in the shade or 40 below. I am hoping (confidently expecting) that Heaven is between 55 and 75 year around, with light breezes, tall grass, and cool flowing pure water; or the equivalent thereof. :-)

Lot of the churchs in our area cancelled today- and I heard one telling folks on the radio to just stay home and to listen to the radio services today...Probably a good thing with the 40-50 Below chill factor we have today- as a lot of those older fogies shouldn't be going out...

I ran to town this morning to get the grandkids who wanted to come help grandpa do chores--and the roads out on the prairie are better than those in town...Most are blown clear, except in the sheltered areas and deep coulees.....
