Good Sunday Mornin.' Christmas is upon us. I'm expect you, like we may be ready for it to be over even if you don't feel ready for the holiday. Maybe some things have not gone as planned, and you are scurrying about trying to compensate. I wonder about the young couple that was to be parents of the Christ child. Mary had willing accepted Gods call on her life. I sure after 6 months at Elizabeth's home and returning home showing child that tongues were wagging. She would have been receiving harsh criticism, all because she had found "favor" with God. How comforting it must have been for her, to at least, have Joseph's loyal support. Then a 90 mile journey to Bethlehem was mandated by the government. It would be tough trip for this young woman who is 8 ½ to 9 months pregnant. Greyhound had not been invented, so they walked. She walked until she couldn't walk further, then switched back to riding the donkey until she couldn't ride further, then rested until she mustered up enough strength to carry on (is this really God's favor?). Young Joseph would be trying hard as he could to make it as easy as possible for the love of his life (when and where should they spend the night?). What a welcome sight Bethlehem must have been. Possibly this young couple was aware that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem, and felt God would surely have a place picked out for them to deliver. He did. I doubt it was what Mary had anticipated. Even at best, a stable would be very unsanitary to deliver a child in. It was a filthy place for the birth of a God's son. Their stable was probably a cave for animal's shelter with a layer of dung on the floor. I wonder if Mary and Joseph questioned why God would treat his son like that. It would get much worse, as we now know; He would be immersed in the filth of our sin. It was simply because God loves you and I. I wonder if Mary had any help, or if it was just she and Joseph. Had they felt "ready" for the first Christmas? They must have felt some confusion, loneliness, or maybe even like it was a bad day for them. Maybe they wondered if God had sort of dropped the ball, or if they had missed a sign and were out of His will. Then in comes the shepherds, rejoicing, with their story. That must have been exciting. I wonder if Mary and Joseph felt at peace or comforted. It doesn't say. It simply says Mary kept these things and pondered them in her heart. I expect I would do well to once again ponder these events in my heart. I know some days don't go as I planned, but He is still right on in His plan. Well, have a merry Christmas and 2019.

Hope all had a Blessed and Merry Christmas...…..or even a relatively quiet one, as we did. Christmas Eve some of our kids and 'greats' and great 'grands' were here for supper and a few gifts. Then, Christmas we two of the 'oldest' generation on the ranch were alone...for the first time in our 78 and 81 years! And that was OK! Quite relaxing, in fact. The next night, we visited family and it was definitely not quiet! And there were only two little girls to create the excitement and noise, tho we all laughed a lot at the
twister game antics. And our daughter can't wait to play it with the little girls later this week! Bet that gets pretty loud, too!
Thanks for your perspective on the first Christmas, Shortgrass!
Ours was different. Quiet, for the most part, but a long celebration, beginning with attending the Christmas celebration of a very large church in the Omaha area with our daughter and son-in-law about a week ago. The music with a large number of people in the choir and those shiny, 'golden' horns which have such a pretty sound, was fantastic to us.
Maybe I said that previously, but our home church is so small in number that it is very special to attend Thanksgiving! Lutheran Church, which has around 1500 members. And, yes, the church name does have an exclamation point after the word 'Thanksgiving. At Christmas and Easter, it seems a pretty large number of them are participating in the celebrations! Our local congregation does get to share a bit of that, as our dau. brings some of the music with her on visits timed so we get some special music a few times a year when they get home. Weather permitting, that will be next week-end! They aim for Christmas/New Years, and again at Branding time, if it can be worked out with their two jobs. The 8 hour one way drive is always interesting for us, but less so for them, not being quite as tied to the land as we are. It can be driven on I-29 and I-9O all but the last ten miles to our house.

So, it's off to the race into the New Year. May 2019 be a blessed one for us all! And a special hope for the moisture to wait till closer to spring when it will bring the green grass we need instead of annoying us with snow now which will probably evaporate before the grass begins to grow again!

Thanks, Shortgrass. That was an interesting and objective perspective on the true events of the Christmas story. Thanks for the lesson in living. The here and now is never perfect, but our retirement benefits will be "out of this world"! Jesus is the reason for the season, and He gives us hope for all things eternal. Hallelujah! and Happy New Year!
