Yes, nice pictures Charlie. I like the looks of the horse too.

Couple quick questions if you have the time.

I know you have some good markets between you and Ft. Pierre, so do you go up there for the type of cattle, quantity (selection), or other?

Have you ever purchased cattle over internet, video, or private?

What is the program from now on for these calves?

Thanks.

Thanks, Nicky I am trying to take all the pics I can for practice. Maybe someday I get some as good as Lilly just posted :!:

RR These calves took to the bunk as well as any we have ever had. Yes that is me on the horse. Got hubby to grab the camera for a minute

Tap Thanks, Raised the horse, he is a Sun Frost bred. We are originally from SD. My BIL is an order buyer there. We really trust his judgement in cattle and what will work ( make $) We have never purchased over the internet or video. I will buy cows down here, but all our calves come from SD. ( I bought my hubby49000+ pounds of bred cows for Valentines day last year  ) We will wean these calves and get them healthy, background them until around the first of the year sometime, then sell. That's when we start to calve out some cull cows. We have another business that is seasonal that keeps us way tooooo busy from mis april to july to finish calves out. This is our slow time of year, so this is our thearapy. Listen to the serenade of fresh calves, ride pens looking for sick calves, then sit back and watch them run, kick and play in a couple weeks when everybody gets to feeling better again after processing.

We're starting to hear of labor shortages in feedlots that buy calves affecting what they do.

One lot had 3 workers, the pen checker broke his leg so they are down to 2.

Some are thinking of switching to all pre-con weaned calves or yearlings. That sounds to me like an opportunity for folks like Charlie to get these calves started and make a buck.

Your pictures are great....just keep snappin em and sharin em.

Your lucky your hubby will take the camera and actually point and shoot....mine's skeered he's gonna break it.....LOL I keep tellin him....100 years from now no one's gonna know I existed because there are so few pictures of me, since I'm nearly always the one behind the camera LOL oh well.....they'll know I liked to take pictures at least.

Jason, It is very labor intensive, especially the first few weeks. Weaning is so stressfull and some calves don't show being sick as much as others. Luckily I have time to check them at least twice a day and we only get about 200 hd. We have been fortunate to have a very low death loss the last several years. About the only thing we lost were PI's and we helped them along. We tested 1 group of LHX calves this year. That's where we have the most trouble. All were neg. :D

Lilly, The best part of hubby taking a couple pics is his noticing how old the camera is and slowly it takes pictures. Maybe a new one is on the way for Christmas??

What are LHX calves?

Do you test all calves for PI?

How often do you find positives.

I am backgrounding my own calves and am thinking about running some outside calves when my lots are empty.

These are good backed long horn cross calves. The have some frame to them. This is the first year we have tested for PI and all were neg. We don't test all calves for it. We do get a lot of calves in that haven't had any shots. We lost 5 calves last year and 3 calves the year before and we only run 200, so decided to try and test this year. When we sell them and they go to a local feedlot. The last 2 years, after feeding them out and having grown them slow to maximize frame, they have always graded mid 80% Choice mostly Y3's.
