She's got two horses that are green broke. She's startin them on barrels. Takin it slow, workin em about 20 minutes or so each evenin. She rides both each evenin. They are so different. One's slow and easy goin. The other is a lil more exciteable, but he's just curious and wantin to learn.
Here's pictures of one of em she's workin...other one is the gray in the background that you can't see much of. Never fails she rides her favorite one first...(that's gonna change  ) and the gray gets riden at dark 30 when I can't get any pictures LOL

'Looks like she's doing a good job. How old are they? Did you raise them? I like her "slow" approach. The best thing for the more exciteable one is lots of miles.

There's not a better activity for a young person than training a horse. Keep up the good work.

Although my boys can ride when needed, this modern age has taken it's toll on them. I'm sorry to say that computer games, sports and what not is more important to them.

The one pictured is 5 years old, he was started when he was three and then turned out to grow....We just got him a few weeks ago.

The gray thats not pictured is also 5 years old. We've had him since he was 16 mo old. at age 3 he was fixin to go off to the trainers, and he had a real bad injury that took about 6 mo to heal completely. Then the trainer we had planned to use was no longer here. We finally found someone else and he spent 90 days with him and we got him home two weeks ago.
With her main barrel horse recoverin from surgery this was the perfect opportunity for her to get these other two started.
I agree keepin kids busy with this kind of thing keeps them outta trouble. but it's not somethin you can force a kid into....they gotta want to mess with horses or they won't do it. She eats sleeps and breaths horses LOL She does play volleyball at school on the varsity team. But she's so ready for it to be over because practice and games cut into her ridin time. Think they only have 3 more games.

Lookin good! Is she going to take someone elses horse to the finals? I think you mentioned something like that had been offered :???:

She had planned to take a borrowed horse to the finals in Oklahoma, but after ridin that horse several times in different places...he's just too dangerous. The horse can run, don't get me wrong....IF you can get him into the arena.....but when your behind the alley tryin to get him in, he does everything he can to avoid goin in. Bucks, backs up.....side passes....and not havin ever gone to Oklahoma to know how they are set up....them indoor arena's are usually a longggggg run in and it's just not worth her gettin hurt. She's found another place to go......in December in Louisiana that's a 3 day barrel race...three runs...for about half the cost. by that time her horse that had surgery should be back up and goin good and she'll take him. The horse that was offered to her, has been off of for a year and a half. Most times if you have one that's got those kinda problems after a good break like that they aren't as hard to work with...he was awful. So instead of workin with somethin that's not hers to get him past that, she took this opportunity to start the two new one's that are hers. I think she made a good decision.

Now you've really got my attention! Finals in Oklahoma? Are you talking about the World Show? I'm way behind here, so bear with me. You might remember my post with pictures of our mare that is going to the AQHA World in November. You too?

no not AQHA finals.....she was goin to the WBR Barrel Racin Finals in Guthrie. She really wanted to go..but there's always next year.

The big draw for her was the 6 brand new fully wrapped Dodge trucks they are givin away, and $150,000 worth in pay outs.......Can you imagine a 15 year old in a brand new dodge truck????? ......I'd hafta put a basketball needle in her ever night to let the air out lol

Shoot! I was hoping we could meet each other when I'm in OK City.

Oh well, it sounds like your daughter is pretty good at barrel racing. Good luck with it next year. Maybe she'll develop one of these 5 year olds into a winner.

I like to see some close up photos of them if possible and see what bloodlines she's working with.

A girl at that age, to be doing so well with two 5 year olds is an accomplishment in itself. I had to give up starting horses at 3 because at that age, many of them are just too much for me any more. Now, I prefer to start working with them as yearlings a couple or three times a year. By the time they reach three, they are ready to go. Of course maybe yours are kept close and handled more from a young age, but around here they run in large pastures and can get pretty salty.

this is a close up picture of "Runnin for the Money" That's his registered name, but I"m still waitin on the papers. Fella we got him from lives in Louisiana and will be comin up in the next couple weeks. So I don't know what all is on his papers.

I have no idea how to go bout typin his bloodlines in on here, they never work when you try to do it in pedigree form.

Jersey Lilly, I'm just curious...how did you get QH papers on an appy?
Or are those QH Appy cross papers?

Sure looks like an App to me also.

With the new changes thaty have come about in the past few years, I imagine there are a lot of other breeds of horses with quite a few QH's in their pedigree.

Maybe thats why he wanted more for the papers, so you wouldn't know he was an app and not a QH. Not that it would matter, if he's a good one and especially where he is a gelding. A good horse is a good horse, of whatever breeding.

But witha pedigree, you notice tendincies, of particular bloodlines.

My dad had an ol' App when I was a kid and he wasn't real pretty, but he was gentle and hell for stout and you could sure rope or sort on him.
Dad cried when he died. I was just a small boy and was shocked that my big, tuff Dad would cry!

Gregs brother raises Appys...his main stud is a Quarter Horse,as long as they are born with Appy colour they can be registered Appy.Greg teases him, telling him hes breeding the bad out of the Appy :P

A horseman friend of ours bought a barrel horse for his young daughter
several years ago. The horse was a chestnut, and as well made conformation wise as I've ever seen. He was something else. Of course,
the horse was registered and the friend who sold the horse said he'd send
the papers. And he did.

Our friend picked them up at the post office.
Imagine the look on his face as he read the horse was registered alright...registered Appaloosa!!!!!!!!

The seller didn't answer his phone for a long, long time.

Worked out okay, the horse was a good one.

I honestly don't know because I never spent the $100 for the papers. All that is what the man read off the papers when I talked to him on the phone. As for him bein a appy, yeap he is...but I was under the impression that there are QH that are app colored??? I'm not big on bloodlines..don't know a whole lot about it. But am interested in learnin. I have paid enuff attention to know several of the good foundation QH if I see em listed on papers...that's bout it LOL

Actually, I am fairly sure that a horse marked as an Appaloosa cannot have QH papers. A registered Appaloosa I think, CAN have some AQHA
horses on theirs. I believe they did this to improve the Appaloosa
bloodlines.

Things have changed some since I was really into this, so it may
have changed somewhere along the line, but I don't think so.

When I looked up the breeding on that allpedigree.com site...there were notations under each registered horse...if it was App or QH..so you may be right.....he may have had App Papers and I just assumed QH.......oh well....LOL he is what he is....and he seems to be doin ok.

Yup,your right, greg said if registered it would be Appy, although it could have a large Quarter horse background.Like Isaid his brother raises Appys, does well with them but they are breeding more and more Quarter Horse into Appys. Heck Lilly its a nice horse no matter the breeding...greg fav. saying is papers don't make a horse.

Faster horses, in no way did I think that you were degradin my horse LOL ......I hadnt even thought about his breedin or papers in a couple years....since I don't have em I think of him as a grade horse.

Jassy n I were talkin the other night....about horses...n she said somethin to the affect of ," ya can't ride papers" n Lil Lilly piped up n said...."yes you can...if his name is Toilet Paper" hehe
