I must be doing something right-these 50 pairs of the neighbors seem to like our grass lol. Guess we'll head out when it cools off and try and push them back-there's some crappy stuff between here and home though. A few were next door in another neighbors wheat so I imagine they are a bit more excited than I am. I know it's hard to believe but in the 65 years we've shared a fence we've had a few on his place lol.

That's a native meadow actually probably a dozen different grasses growing there-about 300 yards SE of there the reed canary is 6-7 feet tall. Three weeks ago that grass was burnt brown-we've had pefect grass growing weather last two weeks-wet and humid. Our pastures shut down in a drought but with our long days they explode if conditions are right.

Is there pea-vine or vetch in that mix?

Northern Rancher - you made me green with envy (pun intended). Pulled a couple of bulls from this heifer field today.

So there is a photo summary of the extremes in Saskatchewan!

BTW, the two bays are Rugged Lark granddaughters. They were "pampered" horses when I bought them - I thought they needed toughening up so they were unloaded out here on Jan 1 - figured they might as well start out 2006 in SW Sask style.

You can tell those heifers are fat, from that far away?

Man, you've got some eyesight. No wonder the wild game is in danger
with you out there...anyone that can see that good...

SSAP, certainly sorry about your grass conditions. Did you start off
good, like we did and then it turned to crap? We do have grass, though
it is pretty brown. Just went in a new pasture with some green in the
draw bottoms. The cows are happy for the time being. I hope you get some rain, I hope we all get some rain!!!!!!!!! It's gotta rain sometime,
doesn't it? I mean the continued rain...something that will soak in and start the green grass. If we can get that in this country, it will fatten
cattle better than grain.

Oh man S.S.A.P,you look dry there. :( Are you in Southern Sask?I hate seeing that, hits too close to home, last eight years were bad for us...this year was awesome, and looks like all the crops are coming off with no hail...yee haw

Yes Faster Horses, we started out green, but the last rain was late June. That particular area in the field was hit with hail on Aug 9 (100% on crops in the same hail path). Those tuffs were/are a type of sage and the grass stand is horizontal, . And yes they are still fat and sassy. We're hoping the good (LOL) areas will hold them for another 2 weeks. We have to finish harvest and haul in the green feed bales from their (next) fall grazing field.

Northern Rancher, no Vigortone - the guys bought local before I finished comparing brands ... we ran out and they weren't waiting! Sorry FH

Mrs. Greg, we are the last community in the SW corner. If I would have turned the camera 1 inch to the left, the west tip of the "Old Man On His Back" hills (2 miles south) would have been in the pic. Huge stretches of native in this area which all looks about the same as the picture but the carryover and this year's grass is upright and "dry" on all but small strips that got hail. Crop yields are all over the board; anywhere from 5 to 22 b/a - rains were spotty this spring. Green feed wrapped up was better than everyone expected, same with silage acres. That was done up by mid-July ... about two weeks into the hot, dry spell.

Yes, everyone (except Northern  ) needs rain but if everyone wouldn't mind, please wait a week or so to let the harvest be completed - then bring it on ... a gusher then a slow 4 day'er (or visa versa) - just think of the good moods all around!

Hey Northern Rancher (or anyone else interested) - feel like a road trip the 2nd week in Sept? The early harvest pushed back our open house/customer appreciation day from mid-Aug. If you want to hang around we'll put you to work weaning and weighing the next day :P They'll be rounded up and put in a small holding field for viewing so we thought we might as well wean when they're handy.

No need to be sorry...

And in the last part of your post, by 'they' do you mean horses or
cattle?

The "they" from the following part

- I mean the registered herd. They're in a large field - to big to tour visitors through in a timely matter, so we gather them into a small holding field where we can walk through them, instead of driving all over.
(I do bring the horses close to the yard also - just in case someone wants a peek at them.)
We usually try to wean the PB's around the 12th of Sept -we're aiming for Sept 15, open house the 14th. Maybe I could entice you into a trip north (2 hrs N of Havre) if I told you to throw on a pallet of mineral ... LOL

(Our commercial herd doesn't get weaned until late October, early Nov.)

I'm going to try and hit your bucking horse sale if I can-they pay out mount money there for the cowboys-Ty and a few buddies have got the bronc riding bug so it might be a fun trip. I think Ty's rodeo finals are on your open house weekend-it would be an awesome trip-I might have to take my pointy stick and go chase some mulies lol.

Northern Rancher - where are the finals? When I read 'pointy stick', here I thought you were voluntering to help wean LOL.

Faster Horses - head on up!

After the summer we had I'm an expert at arranging beds - still somewhat pitiful on the cooking but you won't starve. We could turn this into the ranchers.net gathering if everyone is okay with that idea - it's not centralized for those that talked about it earlier but we'd be pleased to host. We'd just move weaning to Saturday or Sunday - does Thurs/Friday (Sept 14-15) cause get-a-way problems? Pass it along and toss the idea around ....

Shelly, you reminded me of something. This year the open house will include Simmental females. Our son's fiance will have her cattle here by then - unfortunately no bulls though. They are committed to her family's production sale and will be staying with their sibs. I'm sure they would appreciate a plug here, but I better ask first.
.... wholly smokes, my first official words connecting our name to Simmentals :D 8)

Forgot to add - Shelly, put the beast in road gear! On second thought I best not say anything, the crops aren't binned here yet either
Haste makes waste and for sure ... breakdowns!!
