Green Horn

Hey askin' my grandparents if I could take over their op. might be a thought. I really app. really trying to help me, actually giving me a lot of different ways to make it where I want to be, without what seems with all the others, trying discourage! If I were the one being asked to help I would in a heart beat! I would want to keep this lifestyle alive as long as possible, even if it meant working every direction to finally get the right fit. THanks again, you gave me some awesome things to think about! :)

I think we all know who quoted that ;)

If you want to ride pens in a feedlot then you'll never go a day in your life without work. As long as you can show up to work on time and half-way understand what a sick critter looks like. If you can stay sober and take instructions then you'll put in all the time on a horse that you can possibly stand. Once in awhile you'll have to drive a loader or a tractor, but they'll be air-conditioned and heated. Unlike the rancher (and this is the big, big difference) when you work for a feedlot you will show up at work, saddle your horse and get out there in those pens. You will not be asked if you'd like to go to the sale and check up on the local gossip and the market, you will not be asked if you'd like to go to the local cattlemen's meeting, you will not be asked if you'd like to take in the bull sale down the road. Come to think of it, you won't be asked much about anything, but you'll be told a lot about what you're going to do next :!: Plan your vacation at least two weeks in advance and it better not be a long one. But did I mention that you'll get to ride your horse almost full-time? Go to a big enough feedlot and you won't hardly ever step off of that rascal. :D

No one is trying to discourage you.....we've all " been there....done that.......got the tee shirt" and have answered your question with 110% honesty.

If you are taking the info here as discouragement.....you're wrong as it's not intended that way.

We're all encouraging you with reality,we all would like to see you suceed by going into this venture armed with a little knowlegde and understanding of what it entails. Also think about leasing a little patch of ground ,and running a few head.See if it fits you,and if not you can sell the cattle and you don't have a mortagage to deal with.It also would'nt hurt to have a supplemental income till the barrels of money come rolling in :P  .

If your grandparents have land and cattle, that'd be the route I'd go for. Show interest, volunteer to help out as much as you can......I don't know the situation, but if no one else in the family is interested in takin over once the grandparents retire.....you might be in luck.
Out of 38 grandkids, I'm the only one that has any interest in livestock whatsoever. Spent many a summer with my grandma, and her cows. No, I didn't inherit her place....but as other cousin's have stated, I inherited her drive to own and care for critters LOL And I learned an awful lot durin those summers spent with her.

If you want saddle time buy a small base property and put a migatory sheep outfit together, spend all winter on high desert in a sheep camp wagon, then summer in a tent up high in the moutains.

I am very grateful for all of the support I have gotten from ya'll, I see I have lots of different options, and whatever the case I can get a truthful answer out of any of ya. :-) I am excited about starting into my new career which ever path I decide. I'll keep ya'll updated, if ya care! ;) Thanks again :!:
