So I finally decide to plow up a bunch of grass and dump some cows. Got the tractor out today to hook up to the plow which hasn't turned a furrow since 1994 or thereabouts.

Neither has my 1105 MF done much 3 point hitch work either. All it has done for a few years is run the baler or light drawbar work.

So I spend most of 2 days getting the 3 PtH freed up and the tractor serviced, change the worn out fan belts (great job on that one) and go to hook up to the plow.

Well the hitch goes up and down without a load but won't lift any weight. Kinda frustrating. But it is an old tractor, I guess, so troubles are no surprise.

It would just be kinda nice if the price of my product would justify driving something a bit newer . . . cattle prices are about the same, just a little bit more, as they were in the decade that this tractor was built.

So what does that tell you?

It tells me you have to love the life you are living. My family is living in either the civil war or the great depression...I haven't figured out which. In either case we are land poor. Just do what you can with what you have and sleep well.

If it was easy everyone would be doing it.........wow that's a loaded sentence..
Sometimes new is not always better...Hubby's 7730 three point hitch quit him the other day.... Works now, but we never did figure out what happened... I think he bumped a switch.... He says he didn't..... typical for men...

It tells me a divine voice is telling you to take the repair money and buy another cow.

Sometimes we don't like to listen to what we are being told.

It's your choice now Burnt.

I thought that you were plowing with a big Ford.

i understand more than u know,i hope u don't dump all of your cows.
my father loved the smell of black dirt, and his plow more than anything in farming.he was very sick with cancer when no-till was becoming popular, but he went out and plowed his last furrow before he died in 96.

i fought the farming for a few more years.I finally gave it up.sold all of our equipment and paid the family farm off.later i dumped my cows and moved to Branson where my kids have more opportunities.

the 'family farm' is CASH RENTED now to support my mother.with cash rent pushing 200 dollars an acre and it is paid up front.

the moral of the story is my dad loved the smell of black dirt,i loved the smell of cow pucky, and my mom loves the smell of flowers.

i prayed for u today, and hope you can continue to do what you love.

It tells me you need to trade the Massey for New Holland, and start plowin.
Nuthin worse than junky farm equipment,I used a bunch of john deere junk longer than I care to remember,Damn those green parts are expensive, called New Holland one day and had them pick up all that green junk and bring some new Blue, best decision I ever made.15 years later its still plugin along.
Only green tractors I kept was a 1937 & 1948,use them once in a while to rake when I got the time.
good luck

Interesting.....I've been listening, unable to understand why I'm hearing what I am and the consequence of it all.......until a few days ago when a dear friend called. Might say it will be crystal clear as soon as the fog clears up. I'm still listening and hearing something just about everywhere I look but still lots of fog...

I'd become a lot more interested in farming if they came up with tractors that when mated came up with a newer model and ran on grass for fuel :D

Had a guy come recently and haul off sixty years worth of used up iron. First money some of it ever made.

So I just got back from the MF dealer and am less than happy. The service tech told me what is wrong with my 3PtH and it's nothing that a day's labour won't correct. So almost $700. A valve flipped over inside the tranny housing - lots of tearing apart and putting back together, that's all.

So then the salesman showed me a shiny new 5480, 115PTO hp, lotsa stuff - 540/1000 PTO, 2 range PTO, 16 speed, shuttle shift, SISU engine that runs so cheap (on air, basically) that it puts fuel back into the tank and at the end of the day you unload the surplus fuel from your tractor and put it back into your big tank in the yard to use in my New Holland tomorrow, Michelin Radials, two set of remotes, everything electronic that you can practically run from the bedroom so you don't even hafta get outta bed in the morning and a cab that rides on a cloud and I don't remember what all I forgot that this tractor has and can do - it was practically GOLD! But my calves still aren't GOLD so the tractor is still and shall remain in HIS yard and not mine.

A mere $80,000.

But today it is snowing, the ground is white and I might go look for 80 cows instead.

If I was feeling that good Burnt, I'd go buy the 80 cows AND the new cab tractor to feed them with.

But then, you probably shouldn't take my advice. Bankers have carried me so long that 6 of them are going to be my pallbearers.

Im gonna have to remember that one :D
Burnt go drive one of those "Blue" tractors, might change your mind.
good luck

A few years ago we were worried that our old Deutz was on it's last legs and went out and invested in a "good" tractor. So we got a fairly new 120 MX Case with front wheel assist. Life would be good now.

Yup. Real good. As long as it works. If we could take this thing to town and get a $700.00 repair we'd be overjoyed. You can't touch this tractor, no matter what the repair, with less than a couple of thousand dollars. It's a wonderful tractor to drive and use, but to put it mildly, it's a money pit. A gear in one front wheel broke last fall, and it cost $5400.00. That's thousand, not hundred, and it's one wheel. The scary part is that there's still another wheel just sitting there waiting to strike.

Oh ya, the Deutz is still running along with not a problem, and using half the fuel that the Case uses. We could have bought two more just like it for what the repairs on the Case have added up to. If you calculated what the tractor cost to buy, we could have had a whole fleet of old Deutz tractors. Of course that means no air conditioning, heat, or stereo.

Hindsight is 20/20.

No air conditioning is great in winter and I can get by with no heat in summer. I think my wife deserves a nice house before I do a nice tractor-not that the deer graveyard doesn't set off the one we have quite nicely.
