Damn! nipper was over 17 years, very old for a Border Collie. He had a I on his registration papers, as he came to the USA from Scotland in his mother. We never bred him as he had bad eyes and some hip problems. Just a couple years ago he was still working the cattle chute. He licked and helped raise a lot of bum Lambs. Damn it a hard morning.

Had to do the same thing this spring after the nitwit mailman sub ran him over. He was fourteen and one of the toughest border collie I had ever seen. He was going deaf, and his hips were bothering him really bad, but the mail car paralyzed him. I couldn't make myself shoot him so I took him to the vet to have it done. Best $35 I ever spent, but the crazy thing was that I must have gotten something in my eye while I was waiting for the vet to finish their work. Took me a while to get whatever was in my eye worked out.

Still haven't replaced him and I don't know if I will. He was a once in a lifetime dog and I don't think I am up to taking on the challenge of training another one. I may just be content with the kids dog.

July the 4th was our day this year, Frosty waited till the fireworks were done and we got home. Met us at the door, then went and laid on on the quilt she is buried in. Fifteen years old is our best guess, 14 of those were the best years of our lives. I have read about too many similar experiences this year... God Bless those dogs we have been blessed to love.

Tough to lose your pup. Jasper was 14 years old. Couldn't do it myself, Took her to our vet. Sure can bring a tough 6' 5" man to his knees. I waited a long time for the bill from the vet for the euthanasia he performed but never did received one. One day much later was a letter from the University of Guelph from the companion animal research division. I scanned it quickly and saw Jaspers name in it. I thought it was a donation request. As I slowed down I read my vet had made a cash donation in honour of Jasper. That was 16 years ago and that vet has since passed away at the age of 47. Lost two good souls.
It hurts all the way up here in Alberta to hear of your loss Jody, tough to lose your pup..............

Heeler Had been just a touch off the past 3 weeks, still working, still her contrary self, bark at the windshield wipers, knew when she heard sorry a** hussy, something was not where it was supposed to be. Unloaded at the barn, and started bringing in calves, would leave one just to look at me and ask you gonna tell me to go get her.
Cancer of the spleen, not down, just not real spry, trying to make her comfortable, let every one say their goodbye, maybe aggravate Kathy just a little, she never had a house dog till she adopted me and the heeler. She fusses about it some until today.
Been an only friend for several years till I came to San Angelo, guarded the bunkhouse at the fair in Alberquerque, ask the drunk that opened the door, chased the fellow who thought my truck was his personal tool box, sat in the truck quietly while I umpired ball games, rode a dozer all day more than once.
Found a border collie spring before last, having to work on voice tone, sorry hussy has to be with less harshness. Anyway, had to get it off my mind. Thanks old friend, you were one of a kind.

It takes a long time to establish that special bond with a working dog. Takes time to figure out if he/she will be worth a damn. The years go by fast and it suddenly you think he can't possibly be 10 years, or 8 or ____fill in the blank. The loss is so deeply overwhelming. I've been there. Hate it. My hope is that someday, there will be a blue heeler (Mabel) and several Border Collies waiting for me. Tails wagging and eyes shining. My sympathy, cowman52.

I think we have all had that "One" that was so special we figured it could never be replaced and probably they aren't replaced but we can have another that finds it's own place in our hearts.
