the song..Cleaning this gun by Rodney Atkins???

Greg and I were going into town yesterday when this song came on,greg said this always reminds me of your dad. I laughed amounst some tears remembering the first time my dad and greg first "met"

Greg was dropping me off from a date we were in the truck talking{yes talking}All of the sudden thier was a hard knock on the window, greg rolled it down and there was my dad and his best friend Billy,a great big native guy,dad says to Greg. gruffly.."Either bring her home earlier or get your muffler fixed",walks away. Greg couldn't get out of there fast enough.

Knowing my dad I just rolled my eyes said goodnight to greg and went into the house to find my dad and Billy killing themselves laughing, dad said "You prob won't see him again",I said "We'll see"

It took greg a few days to come around but he loved my dad as much as I did once he got to know him and his crazy sence of humour.Miss my dad

Any other meet the parent stories??

Mairi---I do indeed know the song you are thinking of!! One of my own personal favorites!! USED to remind me of the "ex" and the way he was so very protective of my daughter, Jessica!! Poor girl never could bring home a boy"friend" without step-dad greeting the poor boy at the door with the same warning..."If you get hungry, boy, I'll buy you a steak....just don't let me catch you nibbling on my daughter's neck"...course...that was a whole lifetime ago!!

Yeah, Mrs. Greg, I've got one for ya. When I was first started dating my wife in high school I went by her house one evening to pick her up for a date. Her dad was sitting at the kitchen table having a drink with one of his buddies. I said hello to everyone for the appropriate time and we headed out the door. When we started to get in my pickup her dad opened the front door of the house and yelled "Don't be keeping my daughter out too late!" I waved, started the pickup, drove around the block and dropped his precious daughter off at the door. Spent the rest of the evening having plenty of fun with my buddies doing things we probably shouldn't have been doing. This is one of the few times that I had the last laugh on that old coot!

Kinda surpised that our fledgling relationship survived that little maneuver :!:

The whole cd that song is on is good.

I cringe to think of when my children date thanking goodness it's years away.

Why is it when it's daughters fathers have guns but when it's their sons doing the dating it's that a boy! ??

My husband and I were riding in the pickup when I first heard this song and he said, "this is going to be me, although I might be sharpening my knife instead." We have a 14 year old daughter and my husband isn't looking forward to the boys at all...

By the way, I'm new to this. I have read ranchers.net a lot. I'm Soapweed's little sister and it's the best way to keep up on what he's doing!!! :)

This morning, Peach Blossom, my dad and his new bride, and our other sister drove down through the hills to visit Rodeo Mom, her husband, and their two wonderful cowhand kids. It is 140 miles through the Sandhills from our house to theirs. On the way down, we met four vehicles during the whole 140 mile distance, and on the way home we met six. I kind of like it that way.

By the way, we had a great time, enjoyed scrumptious food, and had a delightful tour of their ranch and cattle. It was a fine day, and even the weather cooperated. :-)

Expecially being a hermit with a good wife.

Sorry I hijacked your thread, Mrs. Greg.

Back on track with the main topic. I had traded horses and wild west stories many times with Peach Blossom's step-dad, considering him a good friend, before I ever thought about dating his daughter. (She is six years younger than me, and it took her awhile to grow up. ) (Besides that she always seemed tied up with a boyfriend. :? ) Anyway, my sister alerted me to the fact that Peach Blossom was "between boyfriends" and suggested that I'd better get on the stick and chase her while the opportunity was available.

I called down to her dad's ranch one evening to see if I could arrange a date. As fate would have it, Peach Blossom was the only one home. She assumed I was calling to talk to her dad, and apologized that her dad wasn't there. I hemmed and hawed, and finally got the point across that she was the one I wanted to talk to anyway. I asked her for a date for the next Saturday night, and was proud as punch when she accepted.

We had a good time and dated for another couple of months. I proposed that we get married after she finished school in a few more months. She accepted, and we announced it to her mom and my folks, but her step-dad wasn't available. Just so he could get in on the ground floor and not hear about it through the moccasin telegraph, I made a special trip down to the ranch where it was just the two of us to talk, so that I could formally ask for his daughter's hand in marriage. Being long-time friends and horse-trading buddies, I didn't think the task would be too hard. Was I ever wrong. :? To quote Spike Van Cleve, ol' Royal looked "as serious as a whole tree full of owls" and he put up a lot more resistance than I had imagined. I sweated blood, and he finally agreed. 8)

The next day, I wrote Peach Blossom a letter. She was back in college where she was pursuing a degree as a Registered Nurse. In the letter, I mentioned my hardships in dealing with her dad. I told her at the time, that I would have had better luck going into the bank to see if I could "float" a loan to buy a yacht to put on our local lake. Anyway, it all worked out, and it has for almost 29 years. :-)

Nice to meet you Rodeo Mom. :-) I have met the rest of the family in person cause my place in a very short detour on your way to see your Canadian cousins.

Mrs. Greg, I'm sorry to be interrupting your thread. The kids didn't think about getting Soapweed on the sled or I'm sure they would have done it!! They think that is the only way to go sled riding now!!

Big Muddy Rancher, It is nice meeting you too. They wanted me to go on the trip to Canada, but something else was going on and I couldn't go. Maybe next time.
