The YOO HOO BUCKAROO thread got me to thinking about the differences around the country in cowboy gear and lingo...The old cowboys used to say you could pick out the Texans just by what they wore and what they rode on their horse...

Its just like chinks- I understand they have been around the southwest for some time--but I never saw any until 20 years ago or so...All the old cowboys up here wore chaps-- either batwing or shotguns...

Same with hats...Seldom if ever saw a flat crown-- most were 6" crowns with some type of pinch (the Gus , Hoss, and Conagher types and the "Montana pinch" were popular)... In all the old pictures of my Dad and from what I remember when he was younger- he always wore a "Montana peak" (much like the peaked crown of the cavalry hats of the early 1900's) in his hat... 4 or 5 inch rolled brim with a 6 inch crown that made his 6'6" frame look like a giant to us kids  As he got older he switched to a 3 inch rolled brim and a 4 inch crown (I think Stetson called it the rancher or something like that)...But they all had to be Stetsons....

Heres a sight with some neat pictures of old hats.....Especially the Wyoming earflaps at the bottom of the page...

I've got an old Stetson that has been sat on, drove over, used to whack cows in the arse, you name it. For all that it's in pretty good shape and is never worn until the winter time here anyway.

BUT...no matter....each and every time I've worn it to the feed store or to town and someone sees it....I'm always offered money for it!! OR...they want to know where I bought it because it looks so ' original'

Well it is original....an original hand-me-down as I have NO idea how old it is or where it came from!!

This would be the hat for todays Texan

Nice looking hat there Haymaker-- the oldtimers never wore a straw....Dad used to wear one when he was haying--didn't like them for riding cause they blew off too easy....I don't think Grandpa ever owned one...

Yup, differnce in locale I guess, around here quite a few wear straws year round,I just never could find one that fit like felt.................good luck

Glad you enjoyed your night out. Just because there is a little snow on the rooftop doesn't mean there is no fire in the fireplace. :-)

A very nice canadian lady, that reads these boards occasionally and warned me .........if I did not slow down on the elmo/canadian hussie stories, they would be forced to retaliate.............not a good thing. :D

I too like a silverbelly...This is "old comfortable"-- that the kids say is only held together by sweat and grease- and that Grandma threatens to throw away  ...It was a 5 inch crown and 4 inch brim at one time- and had a Quarter Horse pinch

This is my current dress hat--made by Mackey hatters in Sheridan Wyo- and has a 4 inch brim and 6 inch crown-with horsehair hatband- called the Conagher by them...
