I'm not a mechanic. Once the problem is identified I can usually do the parts changin' and such but I can't identify things worth a hoot.

I have a 1995 F250 with 80,000 miles on it. The rear driver's side wheel makes a rattling sound. I crawled under the truck and was feeling around. See picture, now below. Where my finger is, that deal is loose and rattles when ever I hit a bump. The other one on the opposite side is solid. What am I touching and does it have anything to do with a wheel bearing??

If anyone know the answer, do you know how much money we are talking for the part and can a guy with some smarts do the repair himself?

Thanks

The thing I"m touching goes all the way around the wheel, obviously.

My hubby says its the brake drum your fingers on,studs go through that to the rim,the rim goes over the same studs, somethings loose.Take it apart see where its worn out.

Now I'm listening to him while hes watching The Cowboy Way...so hopefully I got it right.

Sounds like your drum is cracked or broken. Pull the wheel off take a heavy hammer and tap the drum. The break shoes work against this from the inside. You can remove the drum, it pulls straight off there is usually a rust ring at the back so tap it with a hammer and it should come free. Make sure the break shoes mechanizms are all connected and are wearing evenly both sides. inspect the inside of the drum, look for cracks. It is possible that one of your break shoe springs might be broken off the inside and could be lose and rattling around. Either way take the drum off and take a good look at it. While you are there grab the axel and see if there is any obvious play in it.

yep check everything thing Judith said,if you have play in axel you will have to remove the bolts around the hub then slide the axel out to replace the bearing good luck

O.K. What if after I inspect the drum and see no cracks or anything like that, then what?

broken leaf spring,or shock, look them over close, but if the noise is coming from the drum must be something loose or broken inside, brake shoe could be broke also

the rattling is certainly coming from the drum. I'll have to dig into it this weekend! Thanks!

Hubby says to jack up the truck a bit and put a pry bar under the tire and pry it up/down, if the wheel moves up and down, then its a bad bearing.

If you can't move the wheel up and down, and if you can still move the brake drum up and down, then you have a broken brake drum.

Great! Thanks for the advice. I'll try that. Ask hubby how much a drum costs and if I can get one from a salvage yard.

thanks

buy a new drum if you need to,at salvage yard you could get one thats been hot and then you will have same problem
