Got a cow that wants her calf moos to it but wont let it suck. Any ideas how to stop her kicking. She has one week then it is onto the bus to auction. Need some more ideas to try. I

I can't speak to the sedatives, but I know the hobbles will work. It might take some time, but if they are penned together for a period of time she WILL take it.

3/4" poly rope, bowline snug around both legs and about 6 inches between the knots. Leave on til she quits kicking or the legs fall off (not really). We've had them wear hobbles and learn to be pretty easy on themselves. 1 cow with a chapped bag wore them for a month.

When she weans her calf load the b!-ch on the truck. She will do it again next year!

What colour?

Give her enough ace/rompom to put her in never never land, when she wakes up the world will be a lot better.

Remember that if you use it, not to give thema full dose. Lactating cows you can get by with any where from .5cc to 1 and if she trees ya in the barn 2 will put here right out just can't get out of control with it. And it also seems that when they wake up it reboots there system and alot of times you never have to touch them again.

We put the cow in the head gate, tie one leg back about 8 inches and let the calf go to sucking, when the calf is done sucking the first time we will put a little cooking vanilla in the cows nose and all over the rear and back of the calf, might have to get the cow in and tie her up a few more times but we only use the vanilla or old nasty perfume once usually works in a few days.

most cows 5ccs of ace will put them in a trance for 8 hours or more
a small quite cow 2 cc will get the job done . It dose something to their brain , most of the time it puts the bb. back in place . it is a big help I think

Dang! Why don't you guys just try a bale of medical marijuana.

She wont kick in the chute she has been in there lots i can milk her with out a leg tied up. Shoot if she is in the shed she will let him suck as long as i stand there. Try them in a bigger pen and she just goes to kickin. I am partly to blame when i found the calf he was half dead to hypotherma and i took him in to warm him up and then she started this. I only had them apart 3-4 hours. Do you give the ace intravenous or just in the muscle. Thank you all for the tips tricks and advice. Was hoping not to have to use hobbles.

heck when we had little bales I'd just grab a double twine pull it above the hock twist it three times then around the other leg and half hitch it thru one loop and leave in on her a few days . Used to be good at it many years ago when we had milk cows , so It was no big thing putting twine hobbles on a old beef cow

And when her hind legs get raw looking from the hobbles, don't feel sorry
for her and don't take them off til she takes her calf.

That's what I meant by leaving them on til her legs fall off or she quits kicking.

Muddyview, you put the hobbles on once and you don't have to mess with her until you take them off. Any other method is a double daily chore. They have even wandered around the feedground with the other cows here.
Touch wood, we haven't had one for 2 years. Now that I've said that we'll have one tommorow.

What colour cow? :D

come on now guys, if she had a bad udder you would say dump her rear at the sale barn before the sun sets. High maintenance cows have no place in a cowherd.

Hobbles are good, but make sure the cow gets treated for mastitis is she ain't just crazy.
Usually when a cow won't nurse a calf there is a reason, you said the ole cow was calling her calf and then when it starts to nurse she kicks at it ?
What does that tell you.
Now if she just won't accept a calf, putting a dog around the calf is the fastest way to trigger that mama instinct, 5 will get you 10 she will come to its aid.
I hate to milk a beef cow and tube calves, Your call.
Good luck

That would be illegal in most states. Only here in little Cal could that be an option. I suspect that ace may still be the cheaper way out.

If she is a nasty old bag..... rompum...... If she's gentle and can be handled daily then just put her in the stanchion and let the calf nurse.. I feed them grain or green grass. In time she will claim the calf, it just takes patience.... I do my prayers while we have something in........ OUr situation is with the corporation cows we got, we have three that have beat their babies.... One died......... And these are older cows!!!!!! I just don't friggin get it.....

She is black. No feeling sorry for her. Just got done testing bulls now to deal with her. Think we will try ace if that dont fix her hobbles it is. If i wasnt so against buying milk replacer or a milk cow she would be in the trailer headed to the auction. No mastitis in her. Thanks again to everyone.
