Hay Ad

I once swathed over 80 acres of pure bull nettles for a guy who later attempted to pass it off as "dairy quality". Not sure how it turned out, but this guy had been a priest in the Roman Catholic Church for over 25 years.

This same guy had his truck drivers trained to load the semi's so that when the truck was on the scales at the feedyard, the off side of the trailer was loaded with sh!t, and the good hay was on the near side that the scale folks saw and pulled samples from.

Buying hay from out of the area can be worse than buying hay from
a known horse trader. We have really been burned a few times.
Not a good feeling. I don't know how they did it, but we bought hay with
a weigh ticket saying the bales weighed 1300#. When Mr. FH unloaded
it, he thought they seemed much lighter than that. Luckily we had a scale under our bale processer and we were feeding this hay the next day. On that
scale the bales weighed more like 950 lbs. And the next day the same
weight. So we loaded up our 30' trailer and weighed them in town on
that scale. Yep, same weight as the processer. We called the sellers
of the hay and they agreed to take our weight and adjusted the price.
But what if we hadn't had that scale? I think they were caught pretty
much red-handed and therefore didn't argue...we were lucky that
time. I'd like to know where they got those weigh tickets. They weighed
on one of the scales along the highway. :? Anyway that's what the
receipt said...

Roman Catholic priest, huh....... ....geez....

Years ago, a rancher with scoundrel intent (he is no longer in business) was selling cattle by the pound over an elevator scale. As it was getting near the Christmas season, he told the scale operator that if he'd juggle the scale ticket a bit in the seller's favor, he would be given a nice big holiday ham. The scale operator 'fessed up later that he'd taken the ham, but he didn't manipulate the scale. The rancher had the warm fuzzy feeling that he'd cheated the system, but all he actually accomplished was giving away the ham. The scale operator should not have accepted the ham; he should have just said his integrity was not for sale. The only one who came away from the deal with a clean conscience was the buyer, who was oblivious to the whole situation.

We purchased some year old hay this summer and he told me that last year he put some in squares to try to get a load heavy enough to head to TX. Well it didn't get the weight he wanted so he just baled the rest in round bales and that is what we purchased. Anyway, I went up and looked at the hay a month or so ago and he told me this story and that his banker told him he should put a water house on each bale to get them heavier.

It's sad how the harder times get the more crooked people get... I couldn't pass up that Craigslist ad it was just too funny, but so true...

On the same note, I believe most people are honest and won't try to take advantage of us. This guy I was talking about thought it was crazy and never did what was recommended to him.

We also purchased some hay from an old boy the other day in ND. He called me out of the blue and below is our conversation.

Him "I hear you are looking for some hay"

Me "Ya, possibly"

Him "You aren't no hay broker are you"

Me "No sir, my family and I have a ranch 120 miles south of Bismarck"

Him "OK, young man do I have a deal for you"

Me : "What you got"

Him "I have 470 bales of last years hay, each bale weighing about 1200 lbs. But the twine is shot, so you can come and have a look."

Me "what you asking"

Him " he gave me his price"

Me "Really, I will be up in the morning to look at it"

I got there and it was good grass/alfalfa hay, year old like he said, the twine is what year old cicil looks like but it was stacked in a row so it would work and we took it all. He was more than honest and very fair in price. He said "I have been in a situation where I needed feed and I am not going to take advantage of someone who needs to buy hay." I really respected that comment. He was a retired man who sold his place and was needing to get rid of the feed. He could have gotten a lot more for it than he did, but he wanted to help someone out.

Lots of real good people out there!

Yes there are LOTS Of good people out there.
Your story was inspiring, BRG. Thanks for relating that and glad you
got some hay at a reasonable price.

I must say we have had our
mineral business since 1994 and we have NEVER been left holding the
(mineral) bag :) in all those years. In fact, if someone picks mineral or
dog food up out of our grainery where it is stored and they don't get a
bill for it, they call us and tell us what they picked up and that they never
have been billed. Probably the wind blew the paper away or something.
Took awhile but I finally got smart enought to put a receipt book out
there so nothing blows away. Nope, we have some wonderful customers.
Almost 20 years and payment has always been terrific. We really
value our customers!!

I must tell you all, we are getting a CLOUDBURST right now. It is really
coming down!! We haven't had one of these for quite awhile. I know, a lot
runs off, but it's still wonderful.....they said it could hail, but we don't think
it got warm enough today. Pretty windy out there though.

Now I know that good hay is the most important part of beef mommas of keeping the horses looking right but last year my hay got real shot. The local 'hay man' if you could even call him that promised me hay on a set number of bales, not even half way threw the winter I hat a few more loads coming to me and he informed me that I needed to find hay else where. He sold all his hay and cut me out. I looked high and low and found some 2 yr old 1200# bales of sedan grass, it wasn't good for nothing but the people that owned it knew what was going on and the really helped me out and that hay got me threw.
