I have some two year old alfalfa hay that was stored outside My neighbor has a bale grinder I was considering grinding it i wasn't sure if I should blend some better hay with it or straw . kind of worried about bloating . any Ideas?

are you thinking of grinding because of mold? what are you feeding it to? i've been feeding 2 year old hay so far this winter, once you unroll the outside layer the rest looks like fresh hay, and the cows have been cleaning it all up. if you don't think they will eat it that way, grinding some better hay with it will sure help. i would grind some good grass hay with it, if it is available. as far as the bloating...if you are not sure if they will eat it, i wouldn't worry about them bloating.

I'm feeding stock cows in the 3rd trimsister. I wanted to grind it to to blend the rougher stuff with the better stuff. with all the moisture we have they shrunk quite a bit.

No, Jeff, I disagree. Grinding hay doesn't make it better. You can add something to it that makes
it better, or you can grind it and get the cows to eat more; but hay
is just what it is, and grinding it will NOT change the nutrition in the hay.

If your hay is 10% protein, 60% energy, by grinding it you still have
10% protein and 60% energy...

Here is an old and true test -----If you cows bawl when you cume to feed them they are short on protien!

Or I was late because I stayed on Ranchers too long.

or I was gone to Seattle for 4 days and the used to be hired hand got drunk and didn't feed anything for 3 days

Somebody did that to my cows the ambulance would probably have to pick their recently unemployed carcass up.
Owners or employees, I don't have much patience for someone who would neglect animals.

Yep Gcreekrch, have always lived by the code that no matter what you always take care of the livestock before you take care of yourself. Hard to install those beliefs into someone who just doesn't care.
