Hay price

Wandering what some of the prices are around for all types of hay. Just sold millet hay for $140 a ton. Heard around that alfalfa is going for $200 a ton around here.
 
Saw an ad for third crop alfalfa in the winrow for $180 a ton! :shock: It's been high out here all year. Feeder hay is around $100 or better. Dairy hay is way north of that. I bought rained on 1st crop for $85 and felt good doing it. It will be an interesting year for lots of folks. The long range forecast is calling for a colder and wetter than normal winter out here. Hay in the stackyard might come in handy.
 
I have heard of about every price. I know where I can get about 20 ton for $70/ton. I load and haul. Up land prairie hay. Good meadow sitting in the field for $90. Do need or deal with alfalfa. These are big round bales.
Had a guy tell me he has little squares for $3/bale in the barn.
My Father in law, around Pueblo, is paying well over $200/ton, for little squares.
 
In my little corner of the world. Anything with twine wrapped around it will fetch $150 a ton. Dairy hay headed for the Central Valleys will bring $250 if it tests 55 or better TDN. It is like November around here with a storm forecast for snow in the Sierras. Hay is on wheels as soon as it hits the stackyard.
As a hay producers I feel we have peaked out. The Cowboys can't or won't pay any more for hay for the range cows. Dairymen are feeding corn silage and have hay down to just a few pounds in their rations. The Recreational Horse people are the WildCard; As we all know when it comes to a horse and woman there is no economics involved it is all love. Depending on the love, will determine that side of the hay market.
 
Down here in Texas, hay is high. A lot of people still buy it by the bale, without consideration for the price per ton. 4x4 and 4x5 rounds of other that alfalfa are going anywhere from $85 to $150 each, which can equate up to $400 a ton or more.

There's a lot of hay being trucked in because there is nothing to bale down here.
 
I bought the last 3 bales of alfalfa for $130 each. I still have 4 bales of "grass" at $55 a bale and thats all I will be able to get...not sure what I will do. Hoping the feed store in Amarillo will have something shipped in. Sure it will be $150- 250 a bale.
Its hard for the horse owners since we only get it by the bale every 3 weeks to once a month.
 
I wouldn't want to be in the Hay biz long term. They are having a momentary windfall but when all the cattle are gone and the horsey folks get tired of paying $15 for a square bale. They will have no market.
 
2.5 cents a pound here, not much money to be made selling hay in these parts.
 
I made a deal last March to buy hay millet for $45 a Ton. I told him I would take every bale of it he made. I was hoping for about 1000 bales but ended up with about 550. Then I decided to plant another pivot of corn. Some decisions I make are much better than other ones. :?

Speaking of hay, I heard that the Texas Rangers are escorting hay truck convoys into the state because some hay trucks are being highjacked and the hay is stolen. Things are getting very serious down there it sounds like.
 
I get to ride a hayrack tommorrow making idiot blocks so they can load them in a pot and ship it to texas and backhaul some cattle. I have no Idea what they are getting as I'm tradeing some labor for getting some straw baled.A dairy friend of mine bought some dairy quality alfalfa for a $100 a ton delivered.I've got about 200 more bales to make and will have 600 extra. I've got a 120 acres of late planted corn that will all be silage it's 10 to 15 ton an acre corn.
 
I had a lot calls from Texas on my millet. I wished I would have planted more. If corn prices stay way they are there will be more hay ground broken out next year which will help hold the price up some.

Corn is $7.17... If you need more money, sit on it if ya can for awhile.... Corn will be going back up..
 
I am here in Utah and hay is going from $120 a ton for feeder hay up to $225 trucked to you poor farmers in the heart of America. Small bales are going for $4-7 dollars a bale. Most of the hay that is selling is alfalfa/ grass mix. If anyone would like me to give more information on where to find hay here in Utah, I would be more than happy to help.
 
I sold my dairy hay and rain damaged good alfalfa for one money to my usual dairy man at $225/ton plus delivery. I've been offered $175/ton for my oat hay in the stack but I'm probably going to feed it since my cows are grazing off the meadows and with it their winter feed.
